SER Supports the Launch of the Target 2 Resource Guide. SER played a key role in developing a new resource guide released at COP16. The guide provides a roadmap for integrating ecosystem restoration into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, offering practical resources and emphasizing the importance of communication with stakeholders, including practitioners, implementers, and Indigenous Peoples. It builds upon initiatives like the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration FAO's Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM). SER collaborated with FAO and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) on the development and launch this new resource, "Delivering restoration outcomes for biodiversity and human well-being – Resource guide to Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework." Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dj9vvaVa We encourage everyone to explore the guide and join us in working toward the ambitious goals of Target 2. Photo from Left to right: George D. ?? UN Biodiversity #COP16 is underway! Member states are gathering from October 21 to November 1 to explore strategies for implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and reversing significant biodiversity loss by 2030. This year's theme, “Peace with Nature,” recognizes how consumption and production systems are destroying the environment and how #biodiversity can be a "bulwark" against the destructive forces of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Last month, The Wilson Center, in partnership with the Pulitzer Center, hosted a panel of experts that highlighted the significance of #COP16, why it matters to community resilience and global stability, and how investments can support biodiversity conservation efforts. Check out the event here ?? https://buff.ly/4g48QrV We also cover biodiversity issues on #NewSecurityBeat, including bridging the gaps in planetary goals, the ramifications of changing ecosystems, and varying approaches to biodiversity conservation. ?? As we gather for COP16, I’m excited to share insights on the transformative potential of biodiversity credits for conserving and restoring nature. The document, titled “How Biodiversity Credits Could Help to Conserve and Restore Nature,” explores how these mechanisms can go beyond funding to drive systemic change in natural resource management. You can find this article at https://lnkd.in/di57wkCv. Biodiversity credits offer a way to value and monetize biodiversity, encouraging investment in conservation and restoration projects. At The Cataruben Foundation we are leading pilot projects in Colombia that demonstrate the practical applications of this tool. These initiatives enable us to quantify biodiversity benefits, creating a bridge between conservation and financial sectors. As #COP16 discussions unfold, it’s vital to recognize that nature-based solutions like biodiversity credits are not only innovative—they’re essential to achieving sustainability and climate resilience. I hope this document sparks further collaboration and action to protect the ecosystems that sustain life. ?? On the sidelines of #COP16, we launched new Results-based Budgeting (RBB) Guidelines! This guidance is designed to help countries allocate public budgets more efficiently to achieve ambitious global biodiversity goals. With 80% of #biodiversity funding coming from public budgets, the guidelines emphasize the crucial role of government spending in achieving biodiversity targets. The RBB framework ensures that these funds are channeled into concrete, measurable results. “The Result-Based Budgeting guidelines are an important tool that allows countries to link budget allocations with measurable conservation outcomes, ensuring every dollar spent is working harder to safeguard the planet's biodiversity,” said Onno van den Heuvel, Manager for the Biodiversity Finance Initiative.? By using RBB, countries can integrate biodiversity considerations into various policies, planning, and budgeting processes, ensuring a whole-of-government approach to conservation. ?? New research reveals gaps opportunities to align national biodiversity and climate action plans ?? A team from The Nature Conservancy and UNSW Centre for Sustainable Development Reform examined NDCs, NAPs, and NBSAPs from 18 countries and identify gaps and opportunities in aligning these plans. What are these acronyms? ?? In Dec 2022, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (#CBD) agreed to revise their NBSAPs to align with the new Montreal-Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). ??? In 2025 Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (#UNFCCC) and Paris Agreement are requested to submit the next round of NDCs and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) From this analysis, experts developed four key recommendations: 1. ?? Cross-cutting Planning & Governance: establish shared principles, stregnthen institutional coordination and enable data sharing between climate and biodiversity teams 2. ?? Nature-based Solutions: set explicit targets that extend beyond forests to include oastal, marine, grassland, and inland water systems and develop robust data and governance systems for implementation 3. ?? Area-based Conservation: prioritise under-represented ecosystems and high-value areas for #carbonstorage and biodiversity 4. ?? Aligned Finance: channel climate funds toward biodiversity co-benefits, align national budgets with #naturepositive objectives and mobilise private sector investment Read our full brief to learn how countries can maximize resources and improve implementation of both biodiversity and climate commitments: https://lnkd.in/g6ygDJwG Authors: Eliza Northrop, Ben Milligan, Philip James, Rebekah Mawson, carolina hazin, Suzanne Ozment, and Ximena Apéstegui.
