Don't make assumptions about what an autistic person wants or needs. One of the most hurtful things that you can do is not involve an autistic person in a discussion about them and decide based on past experience or assumptions about what they need/want. Please be mindful that even though I am autistic and I have my struggles, I am still a person. My life is my own. To make an assumption that I will struggle with a dynamic in a household (because I like my own space and prefer to be alone) is wrong. To make an assumption that I will struggle at a concert venue is wrong. Are both possible? Yes, of course. The point here though is this: Don't make assumptions. Talk to the autistic person directly. Ask yourself this: Would you want someone to make assumptions about you? #Autism #Inclusion #Disability

When we think of #autism, it’s crucial to remember that it doesn't follow a straight line. #Autism is a spectrum, which means each individual's experience and challenges can vary greatly. It's not a matter of being "more" or "less" autistic—it's about different ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world. Some may have incredible strengths in certain areas while facing difficulties in others. For instance, someone might excel in mathematics but struggle with social interactions, or they may be nonverbal yet have an extraordinary ability to connect with others emotionally. Let’s move away from the idea that autism can be mapped out on a single path or scale. Instead, we should embrace the diversity within the spectrum and recognize that each individual’s journey is unique. In celebrating this diversity, we not only become better supporters and allies but also help create an environment where every person on the autism spectrum can thrive in their own way. #AutismAwareness #Neurodiversity #Support #Inclusion

I’m a stroke survivor, once paralyzed from the neck down. I’m also Autistic, diagnosed at 40. I’m 42 now. I also have PTSD. I’m also the founder of Infinite Flow Dance an award-winning professional dance company and nonprofit that employs disabled and nondisabled dancers with diverse, intersectional identities with a mission to use dance as a catalyst to dismantle biases and foster inclusion. … And many people still don’t believe me when I say I’m disabled. “Where is your disability?” “You don’t look disabled at all.” Well, who said that disability is supposed to have a certain look? Some nonapparent, nonobvious disabilities include neurodiversity, chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, deaf and had of hearing, epilepsy, mental health conditions, chronic pain, learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, chronic pain, etc. It’s important not to make assumptions about a person’s abilities or experiences based on their physical appearance. Nonapparent disabilities can have a significant impact on a person’s daily life, even if they aren’t immediately noticeable to others. Regarding disability representation in the media, tv, and film, we need to make sure nonapparent disabilities are represented as much as visible disabilities.? What can we learn from Netflix's new season of #LoveOnTheSpectrum? Representation of people with autism on TV is lacking - especially when it comes to love and dating. Whilst 'Love on the Spectrum' has it's pros and cons, here is what we think it does well: 1?? Authentically tells the stories of people with autism and their families. We see real challenges, growth, connections and joy. 2?? Raises awareness of autism and starts important conversations. 3?? Showcases a variety of experiences of autism - every person has a different story to tell. 4?? Normalises that love, relationships, intimacy and dating are normal parts of life for people with autism. We have a long way to go in better representing people with autism on screen - but visibility, understanding and authenticity are key ?? #Autism #Representation #Disability #NDIS

My reason for everything I do is to carve a place in this world for these two and in the process so many others as well! The world will be filled with people to tell them who they can be and what they can do, it’s my job to show them how to break down those barriers and prove to the world they are so much more then the boxes they are told they need to fit into. As a special needs parent, I understand the challenges that come with it. We are met with plenty of "what ifs" and even more possibilities of "if not." However, we can choose to sit in those "definitions" of who our child may or may not be or we can fight to help them change them and to make a world that not only meets them where they are but welcomes the possibility of who they may become. If we can show them they are more than a definition of a diagnosis or a score on a standardized test, we are winning. Let's work together to break down those barriers and pave the way for a world where everyone is seen for who they truly are. #specialneeds #parenting #inclusion #disabilityawareness #autismmom #autism #liftingoneanotherup

#April used to be known as #Autism Awareness Month. But in 2021, the designation changed to #AutismAcceptanceMonth. It's an important change and here's why. Autism Acceptance goes beyond awareness by shifting the focus to emphasizing understanding and #inclusion. Acceptance (even dare I say, celebration) is an #action. What does autism acceptance look like in action? It can look like: 1. normalizing #stimming as something that helps folks self-regulate 2. creating #sensory rooms 3. celebrating the interests of the #autistic person and normalize object-based conversations over socially-based conversations 4. listen to autistic voices. Include those voices when making decisions about policies that affect them 5. offer or advocate for more flexible schedules and environments in your company? 6. respect and support #languages preferences, like #identity- or person-first language 7. supporting the need for #movement in different settings, like classrooms or workspaces 8. advocate for #laws and policies that support autistic people and their families and caregivers 9. supporting #intersectional identities (like LGBTQIA+ identities, which highly co-exist in autistic communities) 10. encourage and support autistic #self-advocacy This is just ten, but I wonder if each person could please add to the list of how we can turn Autism Acceptance Month in ACTION, not platitude, and help build a more inclusive and kinder world for all of us.? Can each reader add one more action below that supports neurodiversity? #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #advocacy

Embracing Inclusivity & Diversity: A Personal Journey As a #proud parent of a son with #autism, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible beauty that lies in embracing inclusivity and diversity. This #Autism Awareness Month, I'm reminded of the incredible journey I've embarked on with my son, who is in the spectrum. His unique perspective on the world has not only enriched our lives but also highlighted the importance of fostering #inclusivity and celebrating #diversity. In a world that embraces differences, we all stand to benefit. When we create environments that welcome individuals of all abilities, talents, and backgrounds, we cultivate creativity, empathy, and understanding. Let's use this month as an opportunity to advocate for inclusivity, educate others about autism, and foster a culture of acceptance and support. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. #AutismAwarenessMonth #Inclusivity #OracleNeurodiversityJAPAC #ONN

Identifying as autistic and disabled means embracing my resilience, valuing my perspective, and living authentically beyond societal norms. These identities aren’t barriers but strengths, shaping how I see, feel, and interact with the world. They bring depth and insight, and they challenge the outdated ideas of what ‘ability’ and ‘normalcy’ mean. This isn’t just a label—it’s a source of pride and empowerment. As a Chronically Empowered Coach, I’m committed to helping others find pride in their own unique paths. Together, we can build spaces where everyone’s experiences are seen and celebrated. If this resonates with you, join me in reshaping narratives around disability and neurodiversity by sharing this message. Let’s create a world where authenticity is our greatest strength. Autistic people exist across genders, races, cultures, etc. I just saw yet another movie coming soon about - you guessed it - a white autistic man. And it’s really frustrating to see the lack of diversity in the media representations. In addition, the actor isn’t even autistic himself. I’m not saying autistic white men don’t exist. They absolutely do. What I am saying is that autism doesn’t only exist in white men. If we want the world to really begin to understand autism, then media seriously needs to get onboard already. Media needs to help break the stereotype that they have created. The stereotype that influences medical professionals and others to see autism as only occurring in white men. These same medical professionals then miss autistic women and we remain unidentified and suffering for years. The media is powerful and it’s time that they fix the harm that they have created. #DiversityMatters #Autism #Inclusion
