Another good read. Especially to gain insight to the real Oil & Gas business, not just the “news” version!

Water water everywhere but nary a drop to drink. Permian basin oil production is a misnomer. More water is produced than oil from many of the current producing formations targeted by horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (not fracking) in the Permian Basin of west Texas and New Mexico. Until it is more expensive to purchase fresh water and dispose produced water, or prohibited by new laws, recycling is not likely to provide a solution in the Permian Basin. I have an idea, why not explore for oil reservoirs that contain less water or adjust completion techniques to minimize fracture growth that intercept saline aquifers?

Truly hope that this experimental mining scheme will be shut down. Knowing what we now know, it’s a wholly irresponsible plan that will cause irreparable damage. With aggressive recycling and adaptive reuse we can reduce mining on all fronts

Is it Canyon or Strawn? As the Midland Basin consolidates down, the previous operators are looking to the Eastern shelf for opportunities. Players like Rising Star Resources Ltd. are developing the Crutchfield lease and Browning Oil Co Inc is working the Strawn channels. With acreage to be leased and opportunity abound which ones are working? The Canyon and Strawn are both Pennsylvanian formations with the Canyon generally regarded as the sands on top of the Strawn carbonate or reefs. Depending on your location on the shelf, the Bend formation can be below the Strawn. If you look at older production then almost all of the production gets classified in the Strawn with a few exceptions to the northern end making classification even more difficult. Modern laterals and completions are allowing operators to stay in small windows and optimize the wellbore for higher cumulative production values. These are not the large shale fracs of the west but smaller, and more importantly cheaper, stimulations. NuTech has worked the Eastern shelf for over 25 years. New core has lead additional insights into the deposition of the sands and shown variable waters salinities. With an unbiased view looking at the zones, NuTech can quantify and model well performance including past vertical depletion.
