Oh dear. Netflix has a /helloworld endpoint in production. It looks exactly how you think it looks. A blank HTML page that says "Hello world!". I've heard a lot of really bad programming stories from Netflix. I'm sure it would look great on my CV and I'd have an insane salary, but I'm not sure I want to ever work there! Why do they need this in production? Someone must have pushed some nonsense to production without any sort of review whatsoever. It must be total chaos in there... It makes me want to guess that it means people are deciding who can do what based on whatever decisional hierarchy they have instead of a defined implementation process, independent of who implements it. At one of the 5 biggest tech companies in the world, even if my guess is wrong, there is definitely a lot of wrong at Netflix for their multi-billion dollar product to be having such obvious flaws. Some great insights from my friend and fellow #consultant Peter Hamilton on a fascinating new study from Gracenote that takes a deep dive into mix of #programming and #storytelling on each of the major #streaming platforms. My additional takeaways: 1) Amazon Prime has more programming than you think 2) #Documentary and dramas lead the pack at just about all streamers 3) Despite cutbacks, these streamers want and need new programming to compete! It's hard enough to create the magic for a television show in a first season. But the second season? That's where things really get tough -- and it's why "Squid Game" may not be the ratings blockbuster for Netflix that round one was. Part of the problem, according to experts: First seasons are now epic events -- and a show's premise and characters are fully established, leaving little room to go beyond that in terms of storytelling. Another issue: There's often a huge gap in time between seasons -- three years in the case of "Squid Game" -- so viewers lose the thread and forget characters.
