Excited that my first LinkedIn post is about the publication of my first journal article! I've been studying the landslide activity along an urban slope in Burlington, VT, since I began my PhD at UVM. The major goal of this work is to demonstrate the need to improve public safety using natural strategies to increase slope stability. Our findings show that there have been 20 landslides along this slope in the past 70 years, primarily resulting from the combination of fill materials dumped on the landscape and large rain events. With the frequency and intensity of storms increasing in the region, we have an opportunity now to implement proactive, natural solutions to better protect people into the future. I hope that the publication of this study will lead to some necessary action to mitigate this ongoing hazard! Sharing the story from the Gund Institute for Environment and the link to the pub below. Opinion | It seems that each news cycle brings with it a steady stream of gruesome, heart-wrenching stories that relate to human-street dog conflict. These are usually stories of people, often?children, being attacked by street dogs, or of the mistreatment of dogs by humans. Familiar tropes such as “the dog menace” or “man’s best friend” animate these discussions and capture public and media attention. In turn, more complicated and nuanced accounts that pay fidelity to the socio-ecological complexity of human-dog relations remain ignored. How, then, can we resist these reactionary impulses and fruitfully build on the wealth of work in the fields of ecology, public health, canine ethology, and urban dynamics to come to a more sophisticated and integrated understanding of these issues? The problem of the day: Number of Islands Approach: The approach used in the modified code is Depth-First Search (DFS). Here's how it works: 1. Traversal: We traverse the entire grid, checking each cell. When we encounter a cell with a value of '1' (indicating land), we mark it as visited and start a DFS from that cell to explore and mark all adjacent land cells belonging to the same island. 2. DFS Marking: During DFS traversal, we mark each visited land cell as '0' to indicate that it's already counted as part of an island. This ensures that we don't count the same island multiple times. 3. Counting Islands: Each time we start a new DFS traversal from a cell with a value of '1', we increment the count of islands.
