Fewer than one in ten arts workers have working-class roots. Breaking Barriers for Disabled Individuals: Are Employers Doing Enough? While exploring venues for our Jungle Club, supporting families of children and young people with significant needs, it was eye-opening to see just how little the community truly offers for individuals with disabilities. Employers often talk about inclusion, but how many are providing genuine, accessible environments for people with disabilities—be it physical, learning, or otherwise? Basics such as disabled toilets that are simply larger aren't enough. We need facilities that support independent living: hoists, changing beds, assistive toilets, and enough space for carers to help when needed. People with physical disabilities bring immense value to our communities and workplaces. But are we doing enough to create environments where they can thrive? Let’s shift the narrative from compliance to true inclusivity. While there are many reasons behind the lack of representation in various professions and industries, one driving force is the lack of exposure. ? Consider the profession you chose. Who influenced you? Who introduced you to the possibility of the job or industry or discipline? For many of us, it was our families, friends, influential educators, etc. But, for those who are part of a group or demographic that have been excluded from those professions or industries or roles, when and how do they get that introduction? ? It’s a frustrating thought, isn’t it? All that amazing talent is missing from professions and industries because they were never exposed to the possibility. ? Rather than lament the lack of representation in a profession or industry, let’s change it. ? Here's a tip to help: Target intentionally. While the value to engaging your future workforce is demographically agnostic, not everyone has equal access to you and your efforts. Therefore, take steps to ensure your programs are as broadly accessible and welcoming as possible. Be intentional about where and how you are engaging your future workforce. For example, go beyond the school districts of your current workforce or communities where you already have a heavy population of employees. When intentionally targeting, consider things like transportation: how will families and communities reach your events? Resources: how will students equitably engage or compete in your events? Time: how will families and students of multiple income households and/or multiple family obligations engage? #NoBias #TalentAquisition #Inclusion

I concur. It is so important to allow pupils to be heard and don’t underestimate them — no matter how young. It builds a whole school community rather than an ‘us and them’ mentality. Actioning is SO important…they experience their worth which, amongst other values, is vital for their wellbeing and self-esteem; now, and in the future. #pupilvoice #wellbeing #schoolcommunity
