I wanted to share some thoughts regarding the recent 45-Day review of Navy shipbuilding. Bottom line is that the SECNAV should be commended for demanding the review and NAVSEA should be scrutinized for its common role in all of these delays. We must get at the common systemic problem that has caused five major programs to experience multi-year delays, and no, its not just COVID. https://lnkd.in/eueU-iRr

https://lnkd.in/dACRFcD9 Righting the Ship: Strengthening US Navy Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Hudson Institute 17 Jan 2025 The United States Navy faces challenges across many of its shipbuilding programs. Thanks to numerous causes, some programs are years behind schedule. At the same time, China is building up its fleet and intensifying threats against US allies. The chief of naval operations and other Pentagon leaders are concerned that Beijing may be preparing to move against Taiwan in the next two years. While the US may be unable to surge production of existing ships by that time, the Navy could increase the number of available vessels by improving ship repair, accelerating new, smaller ship classes, and buying or chartering ships built by shipyards in allied countries. Please join Hudson Senior Fellow Bryan Clark for a discussion with Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition Nickolas Guertin. Following the discussion, a panel of industry experts will address further challenges and opportunities to expand the US Navy fleet.

The Marine Commandant, Gen. Eric Smith, has stated that a new classified memorandum focused on amphibious ship readiness will have a lasting impact even beyond his tenure and that of Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti. This memorandum emphasizes the importance of preparing amphibious ships and serves as a reminder to all personnel to prioritize readiness. Despite previous concerns about disagreements between the US Navy and United States Marine Corps, the memorandum demonstrates their alignment and commitment to addressing readiness issues together. Gen. Smith also highlighted that while amphibious warfare is a significant mission for the Marines, they recognize the challenges faced by the Navy in other shipbuilding areas. This memorandum aims to record their agreement and ensure a shared understanding of requirements and training for amphibious ships. By emphasizing the significance of amphibious readiness, the Marines aim to address past concerns and maintain a strong and prepared fleet. #MarineCorps #AmphibiousReadiness #Navy #MilitaryLeadership #DefenseReadiness
