You can’t expect one group to change and everyone else to keep doing the same thing. Sir Chris Husbands Chair of the Professional Practical Experience commission set up by the UK’s statutory body for architects, not only made the case for change but emphasised the systemic nature of this change. Speaking at the RIBA’s education away day, and without going into the recommendations that the commission is due to put before the ARB board soon Sir Chris pointed to the importance of lowering the risk to learners (students to you and I) as they navigate their way through the complexities of both education and experience. Too much of the risk lies with them currently, he said. Where does this risk lie? Getting the right and good experience for sure, but also the foundation through their education. While schools of architecture have been thinking, or in some cases scratching their heads, over what needs to change in response to the ARB’s education review, it looks as if in many cases not much will on the face of it look much different. Early indications from a poll by the RIBA suggests that at the moment about a third of schools of architecture will make no or minimal changes to their courses. However, perhaps the reflection needs to be more fundamental and about what architectural education is trying to achieve. In other words the thinking needs to be, as Sir Chris Husbands puts it, systemic. Hugh Simpson Jenny Russell

When Chris Fogarty's daughter expressed interest in becoming an architect, it sparked a journey into the intricacies of the US and UK educational systems. As a seasoned architect with over two decades of experience in the US, Chris thought he had a grasp on guiding his daughter's path. However, delving deeper, he realised the significant contrasts between the US and UK educational routes. In the US, the road to becoming an architect diverges into two main paths: the traditional five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program and the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) postgraduate route. Unlike the UK's structured Parts 1, 2, and 3 process, US students usually embark on a broader academic journey before specialising. This flexibility, while advantageous, can come at a significant financial cost. Navigating the complexities of architectural education revealed sobering truths about accessibility and inclusivity within the profession. Despite strides towards flexibility, the high cost of education coupled with a demanding licensure process renders architecture increasingly exclusive. Chris's article underscores the need for reform, echoing discussions within the UK's architectural circles. As debates ensue on both sides of the Atlantic, the quest for a more equitable and accessible architectural education continues. #architecture #diversity #education #accessibility #USandUK Fogarty Finger Architects Registration Board RIBA RIBA-USA https://lnkd.in/emv43uWg

#MichaelJCrosbie talks with executive director of @AssociationofCollegiateSchoolsofArchitecture, #MichaelMonti, about the future of #ArchitecturalEducation: "My concern is not that architecture schools don’t have well-considered curricula. What’s broken are the terms by which the purposes and value of higher education are measured, particularly in the world of practice." The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, The American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) are fighting with National Architectural Accrediting Board over their looming threat to charge architecture schools directly for their accreditation. They’ve been in mediation since last year & bills are coming due. These fees would disproportionately hurt historically underfunded schools like HBCUs, administrators say. Also there’s a secret “operational assessment” of NAAB that NAAB says exonerates them and ACSA says absolutely does not. My latest in Architectural Record. https://lnkd.in/gpQE3H6t

#MichaelJCrosbie talks to #MichaelMonti, executive director of #AssociationofCollegiateSchoolsofArchitecture, about architecture education: "People are vulnerable, and that’s one of the main reasons for professions. Professionals are licensed and given a specific scope of work, and they can’t just give clients what they want. Professionals have 'dangerous knowledge,' to quote Daniel Friedman. Buildings can harm people if they fall down. As an architect, you need a professional education based on ethical foundations and values to contribute to a more civilized life." https://lnkd.in/egrYuj6j

The Nudging in School Architecture ?? The “nudge theory” is suggesting that it is possible to influence decision-making and behaviour through positive reinforcement and indirect guidance, a kind of soft nudge. What if we look at school architecture and design through the lens of nudging? What more positive behaviour and more beneficial choices can be encouraged through design and how? What examples do we know? ? In an article for Indesign Magazine, Konstantin Seregin, head of the School Management Laboratory at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), reflects on the theory of nudging in school architecture and suggests five mechanisms for applying nudging in the architecture of public buildings. https://lnkd.in/dqudjcq6

BLIND wins a National ACSA Design-Build Award The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) awarded Associate Professor Jason Griffiths from the University of Nebraska’s College of Architecture a prestigious 2025 Architectural Education Award. Griffiths’ PLAIN Design Build Studio project titled “BLIND” is a prairie dog observation structure located in Ogallala, Nebraska, that overlooks a Black-Tailed Prairie Dog colony cohabited by rattlesnakes and burrowing owls. A keystone species, prairie dogs support 42 species but have experienced a human-caused 99% population decrease. With recording equipment, BLIND will broadcast prairie dog vocalizations to visitors. Data collected will promote conservation efforts to visitors and inform interspecies design-a multi-perspective design approach. Each year, ACSA honors architectural educators for exemplary work in areas such as building design, community collaborations, scholarship, and service. Award winners inspire and challenge students, contribute to the profession’s knowledge base, and extend their work beyond the borders of academy into practice and the public sector. Student Team Credits: Josh Dickey, Jessica Fujan, Jared Watermeier, Christopher Bean, Colton Corrin, Caroline Goertz, Pegah Rahmani, Jacob Urban, Jarod Bengtson, Doug Rief, Christopher Lee Tran Nguyen, Elijah Velinsky, Muminjon Mirzoev, Alex Martino, Austin Wahl, Trever Zelenka, Haley Herman, Alyssa Villareal, Alarcon Daisy, Almamari Wijdan, Erin Applegate, Martha Boulware, Ian Carroll, Elena Felix, Chloe Gilbert, Shayla Jorgenson, Cody Kleinschmit, Dennis States, Grant Wolfe, Payton Betzold, Elizabeth Nielsen.

Steel is often considered for hot and humid climate due to its perceived strengths in durability and adaptability. However, its effectiveness can vary depending on factors like proper coatings and design strategies to manage corrosion and heat absorption. As we strive to achieve our goals for 2030 and beyond to 2050, it's essential to critically evaluate steel's suitability in challenging environmental conditions. During the workshop, we explored the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) Tool, which is ideal for architecture studios aiming to integrate sustainable practices into teaching. EC3 facilitates the quantification of embodied carbon emissions from construction materials, fostering informed decision-making and environmental stewardship in architectural design. I appreciate Jeanne Homer and her colleagues, along with educators and all participants, for this valuable opportunity for learning, engagement, and future collaboration.
