While an offshore developer may be able to delegate the UXO neutralisation to a specialist contractor, package team members need to understand the various stages of the process, such as desktop studies, geophysical surveys, and specific inspections of possible munitions to determine the risks they pose.?As with general offshore construction, the developer, or license holder, is ultimately responsible for safety at the site, so someone in the project management team must clearly understand what’s involved. Accidentally finding unexploded ordnance within your worksite during the construction phase can be a game-stopper. Doubt about your risk assessment methods will result in pressure within your organisation, together with the loss of confidence of both stakeholders and shareholders. Vessels placed on standby until the all-clear is given to resume work will be a major financial burden, so it makes sense to understand the basics of planning and executing a UXO campaign to reduce risks to as low as reasonably practicable.
