It's a day later and I'm still thinking about the presentations (including by my colleague Jessica Posner) during yesterday's satellite session at #AIDS2024 about current approaches and opportunities in #HIV-related implementation outcomes measures and measurement. I'm looking forward to sharing new insights with my team and applying them to our #implementationscience work JSI, such as a #SPNS project to identify #telehealth strategies to maximize HIV care: https://lnkd.in/ew-cBX4y Highlights from yesterday's session included: ?? Whitney Irie, Ph.D. explained that #acceptability, as traditionally defined in #implementationscience, is fundamentally incomplete and incompatible with the complexity of HIV implementation science, using examples from her research on #equitable access and effective implementation of #PrEP for black women in the U.S. Dr. Irie discussed the impact of power dynamics and the "illusion of choice" on acceptability as an implementation outcome, and offered alternative measures for consideration, such as delight, joy, appreciation, and usability. ?? My colleague Jessica Posner told the story of developing a #personcentered care measurement tool for HIV service delivery, highlighting the importance of an iterative improvement process guided by feedback from teams using the tool within HIV treatment facilities. And the process is not over. JSI plans to use the process and lessons learned from this experience to adapt the tool for other areas, like HIV #integration into #primaryhealthcare, #TB, and #familyplanning, and translate it into other languages.
Because person-centered care treats the person beyond the health condition, service delivery must extend beyond medication - it matters which choices clients have in their health care, how they are offered those choices, and how intersecting health and socioeconomic considerations are addressed. That’s why, based on years of programmatic experience and research, we developed a minimum standard for #personcentered HIV service provision and a tool for facilities to assess the quality of their person-centered services. If you are in Munich for #AIDS2024, Jessica Posner will be sharing the journey from conceptual framework to practical and user-friendly tool bright and early on Monday morning (breakfast will be provided). Deputy Director at Eunice Kennedy Shriver?National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
NICHD research includes work on health disparities in HIV care and why it is important to incorporate equity-centered care goals. We need to shape our interventions to fit the communities we are serving and this study demonstrates that. #NICHDimpact #HIVcare
In an NICHD-supported simulation study, researchers projected the effects of HIV equity-centered care goals and compared the results with a projection of HIV care goals in which equity was not central. Health outcome disparities between White and Black men with HIV were maintained or worsened in the non-equity-centered projection. Learn more at https://go.nih.gov/abNNP6f. #NICHDimpact #LGBThealth
