We're here at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, where we have several costumes and props from the original Broadway production of the musical Wicked. Wicked is one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time and tells the story that Americans of love. Since L Frank Baum first published The Wizard of Oz in 1900, costume designer Susan Hilferty wanted to confront this idea of alphabet being entirely evil that you see in the dark black costume that she wears in the 1939 film instead her costume design. Shows the nuance of character. It's not entirely black. They're actually different fabrics and textures, as you can see in the hat here, and especially in the dress that she wears that, that do reveal the nuances of Elphaba herself. The hat was also designed with an upturned brim, so the upturn brim allows not only the light to hit her, but allows her voice to project. Here at the Smithsonian, whether we're talking about Neil Armstrong at the Air and Space Museum or Alphabet and Wicked, we're always defying gravity.
