?? The The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change in Europe has released its second indicator report on climate change and health! Developed by 69 researchers from 42 institutions, this comprehensive report now tracks 42 indicators, up from 33, highlighting the urgent need for action. Key findings are: ?? Record-breaking global temperatures in 2023 underscore the pressing need for climate action. ??? Europe is warming at twice the global average rate, threatening the health of its populations. ?? Heat-related deaths are on the rise, and extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense. ?? Climate change exacerbates health inequities, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities. ?? European countries must accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to sustainable practices. ?? As the world looks ahead to the #COP29 United Nations climate conference in November 2024, there is a growing recognition that health and climate change are intrinsically linked. The upcoming summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, will see health elevated to a central issue on the agenda. Climate change is also a key issue in development cooperation, as it threatens health and living conditions worldwide and exacerbates existing inequalities. Personnel development cooperation can help by providing experts who impart knowledge on climate adaptation locally and support sustainable projects to mitigate the negative effects. Main key points to consider from the report: 1. **Record Temperatures**: record-breaking temperatures were observed globally in 2023, there is an urgent need for climate action to mitigate adverse health impacts. 2. **Warming Rate**: Europe's temperatures are increasing at twice the global average rate, posing significant health risks and leading to preventable loss of life across the continent. 3. **Health Profile Assessment**: the report assesses the health profile of climate change to encourage rapid, health-responsive climate mitigation and adaptation actions in Europe. 4. **Indicator Tracking**: tracks progress on health and climate change through 42 indicators across five domains shows the negative impacts of climate change on human health and the delayed climate action by European countries. 5. **New Indicators**: Nine new indicators have been added since the 2022 report, covering various aspects such as leishmaniasis, ticks, food security, healthcare emissions, and clean energy investment. 6. **Inequality and Justice**: The report also addresses inequality and justice by focusing on at-risk groups within Europe and Europe's responsibility in the global climate crisis.

Claims that global warming will have net negative effects on human health are not supported by scientific evidence. Climate change is likely to have less impact on health and welfare than polices that would deprive the poor living in emerging economies of the benefits of abundant and inexpensive energy. https://lnkd.in/eEqbXuU2

The study below predicts the costs of damage of the climate crisis to be six times higher than the cost of limiting global warming to 2C. - Average incomes will fall by almost a fifth within the next 26 years compared with what they would have been if there was no climate crisis. - Income reductions are projected for the majority of regions, including North America and Europe, with south Asia and Africa being most strongly affected. - This will inflict crippling losses on almost every country, with a disproportionately severe impact on those least responsible for climate disruption, further worsening inequality. This means that, in addition to urgently achieving deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, countries need to develop stronger national strategies for building adaptation and resilience.

The cost of climate inaction is six times higher than the amount of investment needed to limit global warming to a Paris agreement aligned trajectory. Decreasing incomes on agricultural yields, labour productivity or damaged infrastructure will result from rising temperatures, changes in rainfall and temperature variability. Impacts from weather extremes such as storms or wildfires have not been accounted for yet.
