I once worked for a dentist with a temper. Right out of hygiene school I started working with a dentist who mistreated his staff. He was rude to them. He yelled and threw things at assistants when he was upset, running behind or unhappy with their work. He would curse at the front desk. He was mad when hygiene called him for exams. Needless to say, I didn't work there long. In fact, it was a big reason I went into temping. Thankfully, he was the exception. I used to think that was the worst kind of experience I could have in the dental office. I was wrong. Tell me if this sounds familiar: You're an assistant or hygienist. You've been coached on being comprehensive and to convert same day treatment to the doctor. So, you make a real effort to use all the tools in your toolbox. > You get comprehensive diagnostics. > You educate and preheat the patient on possible treatment according to your Doctor's treatment planning standards. > You get the patient onboard for treatment once the doctor confirms. > You've handed off the findings to the doctor. The doctor does the exam and says, "Everything looks good, see you next time." Immediately, your patient looks at you and says, "So, I really don't need anything. What was all that about?" The feeling of wanting to crawl in a hole and die overwhelms you. This is not a general jab at dentists. But in a time of staffing shortages, it is a reminder that when the team has both the patients' and practice's best interest at heart, don't stomp on the effort. Never make the team look bad, dishonest or in-cohesive in front of patients. Differing opinions can be handled professionally. Trust is the number one reason patients accept treatment and keep coming back to us. The best teams trust each other first.
