I agree, a waste of money: "S$335M Founders’ Memorial sparks debate, only 22% of poll respondents feel positive about it". "In September, the Government announced a S$335 million budget for the Memorial, prompting concern from netizens with many questioning the nine-figure expenditure. First conceptualised between 2015 and 2016, the Memorial has gone through multiple rounds of public engagement and outreach. In a poll about 54% of 806 respondents expressed that they felt negatively about the Founders’ Memorial, with 40% of this number voting “strongly negative”. In response to the news of the Memorial, some have questioned if the Memorial was really necessary considering that other important historical figures had monuments of smaller scales. One netizen had even described the budget as “expensive” and “extravagant”. “I think it’s a huge splurge that isn’t really necessary,” says 33-year-old media professional Jiahui Wee. She finds it difficult to see why the Memorial is needed, especially since Lee Kuan Yew was also against glorifying heroes and building statues to commemorate himself." Indeed. A waste of money. Master Class: Restoring Remnant Woodlands in a Sea of Bush Honeysuckle Many natural woodlands and shady landscapes are infested with invasive bush honeysuckle (???????????????? ??????????????), one of the biggest current threats to native woodland ecosystems. When mature, these highly aggressive invasive shrubs compete with native plants for sunlight, nutrients, and moisture, and can choke them out. In this online master class with Scott Woodbury, you will learn about the history and spread of bush honeysuckle and how to control and replace it on your sliver of earth. Scott will share how to identify bush honeysuckle and its look-alikes, learn how to control it and what to replace it with. This persistent plant, and others like it, are here to stay, so get ready for long-term scouting and removal of shrub sprouts. The good news is that you may have remnant native plants hanging on for dear life in your existing woodland. The great news is that you can resuscitate the wooded area of your yard or property back to something similar to its former glory days.
