Schema markup is losing its edge in the AI era. Schema has been crucial for SEO, enabling rich results and improving search visibility. 72.6% of first page Google results use schema, yet only 30% of websites utilize it (source: Backlinko), aka it still matters for first page Google rankings. Pages with schema see 40% higher CTRs and 2.7x more organic traffic (source:SingleTone/Blue tone media). However, the big assumption, and I used to bet on this horse, too, was that it is also relevant for AI readiness. It turns out not really. Rather than relying on schema, AI optimization will focus on semantic content structuring, NLP-driven clarity, and entity-based content strategies. I don't want to nag, but Google has been using this for over 5 years while everyone cared so much for keyword-to-keyword mapping and several backlinks. Is there still traffic and monetary value in marking up with schema? Yes. Is it part of preparing for the AI search? Most likely, no. Follow the colleagues I mention in the comments for detailed follow up and analysis.
