The BIGGEST misconceptions about getting into tech: ?? (Because if I can, you can too habibti) ??....... 1) You need to be a coder/developer. FALSE ?? There are thousands of other roles you can do like: product management, marketing, sales, project management, accounts, data, consultancy etc 2) You need to have a degree. FALSE ?? Although it is useful to have, if you didn't want to commit yourself to 3 years and a mountain of student debt, you'll be pleased to know that experience trumps all. You can upskill in your role through thousands of government funded initiatives or off your own back. 3) You need to have previous tech experience. FALSE ?? This would definitely help but there are many start ups and scale ups in the technology space that prioritize attitude/problem solving/ability to learn over what's written on your CV. I know because I used to hire for them. 4) Once you're in, you're sorted. FALSE ?? There's constantly things changing in the digital space whether it's tools, platforms, approaches to work etc. It's important to always stay up to date with best practice and what's new. It's very easy for individuals or whole companies to get complacent and be left behind. 5) You will magically be on a fantastic salary and package if your first job is in tech. FALSE ?? Let's be honest, you will probably need to do 1 or 2 "stepping stone" roles before landing a job that is more in line with your passions and career trajectory. The more value you add, the quicker you'll move up the food chain.

The most common question I hear when people ask me about my job. "I want to get a tech job, but I don't know how to code." It's time to debunk the myth that coding is the only entryway into a tech career. Tech companies are in essence, businesses, and all businesses have various roles that are vital for their success. Yes, coding is crucial. It's the engineers who turn coffee into software, creating innovative products. However, those products don't sell themselves. You still need sales folk who can sell the software, so sales skills are in high demand! But once these products are sold, who’s there to ensure customers are happy and get the most out of those products? Enter the customer service folks, managing tickets and requests. They also play a huge part in getting feedback on the product. Behind it all, the backbone of each tech company are the accountants, HR managers, and finance professionals. They keep operations running smoothly, ensuring salaries are paid, taxes are filed, and potential talents are hired. And last but not least, my favorite, marketing! All tech companies need strong marketers to create messaging, positioning, and execute go to market campaigns. So, if coding isn't your strength, fret not. There’s a place for you in tech! Your skills, whether they are in communication, problem-solving, or financial analysis, are valuable and needed.

A "dark" side of being a force multiplier & go-to person in your team & company. Everyone talks about the positive aspects and benefits of being a go-to person and multiplier in your team. But, it's not always a sunny shining day. I have been such a person for the last three years for my teams and some domains across the company. On any given day, I: 1. lead and manage team 2. build/design solutions 3. answer queries and discussion 4. support teams and customers integrating our payment APIs 5. any sales and discovery calls 6. any unique domain tasks assigned to me. I am sharing my experiences managing all this. 1. You will have context switches multiple times a day. 2. No focus. 3. Have to be responding and unblocking ASAP whenever a query comes. 4. Even if you are on leave, chances are some will drop you a message. 5. Forget about 4-hours of deep work. 6. Big responsibility for understanding and sharing the best solutions At the day's end, you might think, my tasks are still pending. So I am left with just two options: 1. extend one story point to multiple days. 2. a couple of hours of deep work after the day ends. There is also an advice that blocks the calendar but it makes sense if you start working early. But, if you have so many dependents, as in my case, chances are you will have queries and blockers queued just before you start the day. But, you are not getting paid mainly for doing those coding tasks but for providing value somewhere else. It's possible that in large companies such persons are not assigned any personal tasks but in startups with small teams this is not the case. Despite all this, this is still one of the best ways to grow faster and reach management and tech lead levels. And you should aim to master one technical domain or product in the company to grow by leaps and bounds. How do you manage all this as a go-to person? I have added dark word. Embracing the Junior Journey ?? Let me share from my own experience. I've had the chance to work in completely different and sometimes unrelated fields: law, sales, logistics, and marketing. Each time, I started as a junior, eager to learn. ? In law, I learned to pay attention to details and handle paperwork; ? in sales, that was all about talking to people and making convincing pitches;? ? in logistics - dealt with challenges and managed risks;? ? in marketing - boosted my creativity and analytical skills. I even took a class in business strategic thinking, thanks to my previous boss. I might not be a top expert in everything, but I've become pretty good at what I do. And I can still offer legal advice when needed. That's just part of the journey. There's no need to feel embarrassed about being new or ashamed of a lack of experience when submitting a resume or talking to a recruiter. I like to think of juniors as startups. Everything in this world starts with an idea, whether it's launching a rocket into space or creating an AI that the whole world is buzzing about. Then the idea turned into a startup in a garage (hello to the giants of Silicon Valley), and only after that became a big company. Juniors' path is like that too. Being a junior or working with juniors is always about curiosity and energy. With this post, I want to support each of us who is a newbie now — whether in a career or migration ?? Just keep going, maybe you will bring the next innovation to our world ??

Remember when being a great lawyer or accountant was enough? Shoot, even being a great marketer or salesperson? Talent was enough to maintain your competitive advantage. Now? Those days are long gone. Now, talent alone isn’t enough. I don’t care if we’re talking law, finance, accounting, sales or data entry. Even if we are talking law, if your tech is outdated, your team is naturally less productive and can't compete with the firm down the street that's fully updated. Here’s why: 1. The pace is relentless: Today’s tech landscape is evolving rapidly. Three months can feel like 10 years. Falling behind even slightly can create a massive gulf, making it harder to catch up. 2. Talent shines with tech: Leveraging tech to become superhuman in your job, role or company is the next wave in worker advancement. (That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it…) Those who stay updated in current technology can outpace and outperform those with exponentially more raw talent. 3. You need tech advocates: OK, so what’s current? How can you keep up? Without those whose job it is to be in the trenches, dedicated to keeping your talent and company ahead of others, it's going to be hard—if not impossible—to compete over the next 5-to-10 years. At the end of the day, it's not about being competitive for tech’s sake so you can say you have the best tech stack in town. It’s about strategically leveraging the right tech for your industry, clients and talent to stay productive AND competitive. This isn't just about staying in the game. It's about enabling and empowering your team to play so well with the unfair advantage your tech brings—you’ll win by default. What unfair advantage does your tech give you? __________ Ps. ?? When to hire a software engineer for your startup? Deciding on the right time to bring in a software engineer for your startup can be a complex decision. Here's my simplified guide: 1?? Define your timeline and goals: Understand what you're trying to achieve and when you need to achieve it. 2?? Assess your finances: Can you afford to bring in a software engineer at this stage? 3?? Evaluate the complexity of the project: If it's a simple software that can be developed using existing tools, you might not need a software engineer. But for complex projects, especially those involving AI, you'll likely need an engineer. 4?? Determine the level of expertise needed: Some projects require a mid-level or highly experienced engineer, while others can be handled by a beginner. 5?? Consider your involvement: Are you willing to learn software engineering and contribute to the project, or would you rather hire an expert? And yet, if we take a quick look at the quality of the internal products employees use in their daily job, many of them are poor quality. I have yet to see a HR or a time booking platform that is made to be used by humans, same goes for other common platforms we need to use to function as a company. ? Then if we move into looking at the internal tooling used by developers, situation is not getting much better, in some cases these platforms are worse, especially the ones built in-house. They simply don't seem to get the same attention as the externally facing products. Which is understandable from the perspective that employees do not pay for the internal platforms they use, these platforms don't bring revenue directly (that would be a crazy idea, for employees to pay a subscription from their salary to use internal tools ??). But they do indirectly, by enabling people to do their job faster ?? and better ??. Since this is an indirect relationship, it is hard to quantify and visualise, but not impossible. Still, I don't think anyone disagrees that better tooling enables being able to achieve more and better with the same amount of people and time. ? I think another important cause internal tooling is poor quality is due to it not being treated as a product. In many situations, it is not even well understood what its purpose is by some parts of the organisation. This brings a vicious cycle: poor understanding of the tooling and its purpose and value brings less financial investment in it. Less financial investment brings not having the time and people to turn it into a product, which contributes to the tooling being poorly understood. ? What is your take on this?? ?
