(Disclosure: I have no financial interest, direct or indirect, with any generator manufacturer, seller or servicer.) I have lived in two places that suffered extended power outages: Long Island, NY after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and Broward County, Florida after Hurricane Wilma in 2004. Both of these disasters taught me a lesson: a whole-house generator that runs on a hardwired fuel source (typically natural gas) is absolutely essential. A standby generator, as they are called, is installed with a “transfer switch” which detects when the power from the electric utility shuts off, and in response it starts the generator. The generator is powered by a small engine whose output is matched to the total capacity of your home’s electric panel. That engine is fed by a natural gas line (or a propane tank, where natural gas service is not available). The transition from utility power to generator power takes about ten seconds. From that moment the generator will supply the house with the same electric output as the utility company, indefinitely. A generator can make all the difference between being able to stay in your house and having to evacuate in the event of an extended power outage. Even two or three days without power can be unbearable in hot and humid Florida, or for people with medical issues. The cost of a whole house generator is about $10,000 installed. The big retail home supply stores offer financing. And any home benefits from increased resale value with a generator. From personal experience I highly recommend a hard-wired generator.

$800M was spent on mobile generators that were not deployed during Beryl. This is slightly misleading. Fall-in trees and down distribution lines were the predominant drivers of outages, so while deployment of mobile generators may have reduced some customer outage durations, they still would have had substantial number of customers out. These generators were procured primarily to address future load shedding events to prevent another Uri, not prevent down power lines from hurricanes. Not all adaptations are created equal, nor do they address the same types of climate hazards. This is why using a resilience framework that forecasts asset-level dollars of risk driving a benefit-cost analysis is so important. It optimally address the multiple types of risk a utility faces. I'm hopeful for a positive outcome from CenterPoint's recently filed $2.5B System Resilience Plan. We will see what the regulator decides soon enough. #rewardsofresilience #utility #Beryl #resilience #energy https://lnkd.in/euAt3rjb

This attempt at an outage tracker by CenterPoint Energy is garbage. It's like they paid a middle school student to craft a rudimentary website that shows colorful visualizations of the absolute most useless and meaningless data while providing zero insight or value for customers. If you can't do the thing you're being paid to and deliver electricity, and you suck at being even the slightest bit prepared for disasters that you knew were coming, the very LEAST you can do is focus on better crisis communications and provide customers with crucial information they need rather than sending out daily messages patting yourselves on the back for doing nothing and providing lies and empty platitudes. https://lnkd.in/gsEbDB-x

Utility Companies are trying their hardest to maintain power during this crisis in Texas, but it's not enough. Grid 1.0 is old and has too many stress points along the grid. Consider that it takes six years to build a transformer, and if ERCOT goes down completely, that means it lights out for a substantial period of time. Switching to distributed energy isn't just a 'good to have' but a strategic imperative and a national security issue. The fact that it is so mainstream now, but no one is talking about solutions is scary. https://lnkd.in/eTEy49-U
