We work with health clubs and YMCAs to get more people moving (and participating) in group fitness. Working out in groups is THE best way to build connection and community, and it is a proven way to improve adherence and accountability. The challenge is that oftentimes facilities only service a fraction of their members in group fitness (sometimes as low as 10 to 15%). The rest of their members are left to work out alone. But boutique-fitness facilities (cycling or yoga or rowing or barre or boxing or bootcamp) service 100% of their members in group fitness. There is no option to work out alone. They've made the group fitness door their only door. What can we learn? Who has the competitive advantage? Well, I wrote about it.
"THE MODEL HAS TAKEN THE GROUP FITNESS DOOR AND MADE IT THEIR FRONT DOOR (AND IN FACT, THEIR ONLY DOOR)." Boutique fitness facilities have made single-service, socially-driven, smaller-footprint studios a rapidly growing segment of the fitness industry. What can full-service gyms learn from the business model? And how can they leverage their advantages to create boutique-like experiences and beat the boutiques at their own game? And to be clear, the game is delivering amazing, engaging, social group fitness experiences. School Sport Teams and Clubs. Neighborhood gatherings and committees. Church Small Groups and Volunteer Teams. Your town’s rec leagues, sewing groups, gardening club, etc. These are all groups we are often encouraged towards to find community within community. Provided our experiences are highly positive, they help us make friends, have more fun, and stay involved. Group Fitness is a health center’s best way to help their members find that community within community. Group Fitness has proven so effective with this that the boutique model, based solely around the group fitness experience, is currently outpacing new members joining health & fitness centers. Yet, the response is often more passive (sometimes dismissive) in regards to group fitness. Check out this write up to see what can be learned from the boutique model and how it can be applied to your health & fitness center.

I don't think it's too bullish to say the fitness industry is at a turning point right now, and F45 is leading the charge. Repfitness worked with them on a solution that adds over 400 exercises to their programming—all while maintaining the compact footprint of a traditional power rack. In my opinion, this partnership signals a shift in functional fitness: it’s no longer about expanding square footage, but about smarter design, efficiency, and unlocking new potential in existing spaces. With more versatility in less space, gyms can serve broader audiences, innovate faster, and stay ahead of industry trends. How do you think this pivot toward maximizing functionality with minimal footprint will reshape the functional fitness landscape? https://lnkd.in/gRtFyYqH

In only two years, the Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services mandated that insurance plans differentiate between physical fitness, wearable fitness trackers, and memory fitness programs. According to federal data, memory fitness, also called brain training, is the fastest-growing Medicare Advantage fitness benefit. Memory exercises are now offered by more than 25 percent of plans that offer fitness benefits, frequently tied to gym memberships. Brain training programs like BrainIQ has quickly become a popular offering for both Medicare Advantage companies and consumers. While the perk may seem brand new to some – Medicare only approved memory training’s inclusion in plans in 2019.

?? Gym Industry Recovery and Growth: 2020 to 2024 ?? The gym industry in the United States has undergone significant changes in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to the permanent closure of approximately 17% of gyms. This resulted in around 31,000 fitness facilities remaining by 2022, a notable decrease from pre-pandemic numbers. Fast forward to 2024, the industry is showing resilience and growth. The number of gyms is stabilizing, driven by an increase in fitness awareness and the adoption of hybrid models combining in-person and digital fitness offerings. This adaptability is crucial for the industry's recovery, helping to boost membership numbers and open new facilities. As we continue to see growth and recovery in the fitness sector, it raises an important question for our communities: Does your community have enough gyms to meet the increasing demand for fitness and wellness? #FitnessIndustry #GymGrowth #CommunityHealth #FitnessAwareness #Wellness
