Skills-based hiring is not a fad. Despite criticism from grand publications like Forbes Magazine, we know that this shift in hiring varies based on perspective and business objectives, yet many misunderstand what skills-based hiring means. Skills-based hiring does not mean that degrees and traditional education pathways are no longer relevant. That is far from the truth. Skills-based hiring is an opportunity for employers and recruiters to look at some of their entry level positions and determine if the role truly requires a degree or if the candidate only needs some knowledge and the rest can be learned on the job. This widens the talent pool and expands earning opportunities. If a candidate checks all the boxes before the interview, where are the real professional growth opportunities when they’re in the role? Don’t worry, skills-based hiring doesn’t mean that you’ll have a mechanic who wanted to pivot into healthcare conducting open heart surgery (unless they graduated from medical school), but it can mean that someone who has taken healthcare fundamental courses would be able to check and record your vitals at your local doctor’s office. There are nearly 3million unfilled skilled positions in America right now – 500,000 being in manufacturing alone. How many of those jobs can be filled with people who have the skills without a degree requirement? Skilled jobs are in-demand. Skills-based hiring is a tactic that should be implemented to meet the current workforce demands.
