Sewage sludge: samples of treated sludge we tested contained levels of PFAS & flame retardants that wouldn't be considered safe to use on an allotment. Our article in the Guardian. EA insiders tell us large volumes of industrial waste enter sewage treatment works every day, as well as human waste, either via the sewerage system or by tanker. Much of the waste tankered in contains leachate – dirty liquid created by landfills – which contains a cocktail of chemicals from a range of industries. Each year, more sludge produced from this mix is spread on the UK's farm fields. Realise this is a controversial topic, but we do need to talk about the way we're producing biosolids, & the way that chemical pollution is making that process much more problematic.
