Our algorithms reveal the lobster spots. And we can do that all over the world Two years ago, we received a letter from Norwegian regulatory authorities (no need to mention names here). They thought our bottom maps were too accurate. Well, if we can do it, with open data and intelligent people, I know of a couple of larger organizations and states that can do it too. We invited full openness and insight.? Last year, we applied for a patent for AR/AI technology for registering catches, which the Norwegian Coast Guard now uses. The development is supported by Innovation Norway.? I've been shouting as loud as I can that this technology can be used in the management of our underwater resources. Recreational fishermen taking quotas across borders, escaped farmed fish, registration of salmon in waterways, etc etc. Yesterday, in prime time on the state owned and largest broadcaster in Norway; Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK), we presented 220,000 lobster sites along the coast of Norway.? And a rush of downloads afterwards. There are 32,000 registered lobster fishermen in Norway. It is often an inherited tradition, with “secret fishing spots” that are protected.? The technology is there, along with the knowledge and open source data. We have opened up this world to everyone. And we would very much like to contribute to the management of our resources. Those of you who have heard me speak have surely grown tired of hearing me say just that in recent years. Being small and commercial is not always an advantage. But we have the biggest advantage. The knowledge.? All our technology is being developed under the leadership of our brilliant CTO Trond Svandal, and the knowledge of fish and underwater life is led by one of Norway's most knowledgeable fishermen, CFO (Chief Fishing Officer!) ?? I'm sure you've also seen the moving stars at night, explaining to your kid, mom, dad, friend, dog, self that those are actually no stars, but satellites. Here's an extra story line to further impress your audience ;-). ?? Global Fishing Watch is an international nonprofit that wants to make ocean activities more transparent. Their mission is to create and publicly share map visualizations, data, and analysis tools to enable scientific research and transform the way our ocean is managed. They are now stepping up their game by using satellite data to map small vessel activity. ?? Vessels at sea are typically monitored with GPS-based technologies like AIS (Automatic Identification Systems) and VMS (Vessel Monitoring Systems). One of the challenges GFW is facing are the many small fishing boats that don't use any tracking systems, making it hard to monitor their activities. By mapping the activities of smaller vessels close to shore using satellite data, GFW can add several million more previously untracked vessels to their platform. ?? Paul Woods, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Global Fishing Watch explains that “This brings us much closer to achieving our audacious goal of mapping all human activity at sea—for both the good of the ocean and the people whose livelihoods depend on healthy fisheries and marine ecosystems.” ?? When going over the the past years there are couple of projects which stand up. One of them was in 2016 or 2017 a project called "Seascann" (or that was a working title that just got stuck). Seascann was a highly sophisticated AI species recognition system which got a huge EU Grant because the project aimed at getting all fishing vessels connected, uploading the data into a huge cloud-based information center which could have revolutionized the "fresh fish market". At first this was a "Crazy Idea" but computer based recognition had been around for several years but never in these harsh environments, so if someone could imagine a vessel hitting 10 meter high waves and wind speeds up to 30 m/s. With all the onboard vibration and the equipment covered with seawater and still able to recognize species and analyze the sizes, weight estimation and so on. Extremely challenging project but with the correct team everything is possible :)

We - the European Tracking Network - is a platform for aquatic research, collaboration, development, and data management. We are a network in every sense of the word; a network of tracking infrastructure listening for tagged fish and crustaceans, as well as cetacean sounds, a network of of knowledge, and of course, a network of people ?? Our mission is to track aquatic animals across Europe to better understand, protect and manage them. We use telemetry - the science of "measuring" or "tracking" animals from a distance - to do so. Our primary approach is via acoustic telemetry, whereby a transmitter inserted into or attached to a fish (or crustacean) emits a unique ping that a network of acoustic receivers can hear. We can then know when and where tagged animals were detected, and uncover their movements, habitat use, and so much more ?????? ETN was officially born in 2017, thanks to the efforts and devotion of a small group of European researchers who saw the value in sharing infrastructure, knowledge, and data. Since then, ETN has amassed more than 936 MILLION (!!) detections, from more than 23000 tagged animals of 154 species. We currently have over 4800 acoustic receivers in European waters listening for tags, and have more than 500 active members across the continent ? Fish are known for their amazing navigation skills, so scientists designed a fish-operated vehicle with special software and a motion-sensing camera.? ? A camera was positioned above its tank to test the fish's navigation, and the fish was taught to drive-by moving its body around the tank.? ? Scientists give a target destination to goldish and when it hits the target, they reward it with food.? ? It took goldfish ten days to learn how to "drive."? ? It's widely believed that goldfish have 3 seconds memory, but scientists say they can remember things for months. So yes, if they were to park, they would remember where they parked!?
