Thanks Mateusz for bringing up this critical point. As mentioned, there are organizations, that have been running SAP for atleast a decade, with lot of Custom Developments to cater their business scenarios. But, if you review them, following will be the observations: 1. Developments which are critical for Day to Day operations, probably an integration with a Non-SAP Application, or a Critical Business Scenario which was "probably" not catered by SAP's standard functionality either fully or partially, resulting in a custom development. 2. Developments which were deployed due to requirements from an individual department/team, or an individual Senior Management Personnel at a certain point of time. Some of these requirements fall under the category "We had a development like this in our earlier organization". These developments could have been used during that period or to an extended period, but are not being used now, or have been replaced by some other development, or a standard functionality in SAP. 3. Developments which fall under the category - "Nice to Have". Some of them fall under the category mentioned in the previous point. As far as Point No 1 is concerned, it the responsibility of the Implementing Partner to analyze these kind of developments, and probably suggest a Standard Functionality, which is available in the latest flavor (Not available in ECC6.0, but available in S/4 HANA). But for this, it would be better if proper documentation is available for all these Technical Developments, with the customer. So, at any point of time, during the transformation, it is highly critical to analyze these custom developments, and retain only them which are really showstoppers. But time is ticking. So it is ideal that organizations which are planning for a transformation from ECC6.0 to S/4 HANA, start this exercise as early as possible, to avoid the 11th hour turmoil. #customdevelopments #integrationwithSAP

Trying to achieve 0 technical debt in your S/4HANA transformation is a bad idea. Let’s face it - organisations running on SAP have been accumulating their custom code for years and years. Some of it is ok, other might be terrible. But often times we hear that moving to S/4HANA is THE TIME to get rid of ALL OF THE TECHNICAL DEBT and start fresh. I disagree with it and here is why: - Companies that want to make the transformation PERFECT will delay it until they are really ready, but will they ever be? - Reducing the TD down to 0 might end up never really paying off - Trying to make everything perfect might multiply your TCT - Total Cost of Transformation (I’ve just made this acronym up!) - Some TD will NEVER affect your upgrades, system stability, security or even TCO I was initially onboard of this train too but now I no longer am. It’s time to start being realistic. So what to do instead? Categorise and prioritise TD and focus on the one that really does make things worse and not the one that only fancy theories and shiny slides tell you to clean up. The clock is ticking. The longer you wait the less time you’ll have for the move. It’ll never be the perfect time to start and aiming for perfection might end up disastrous.
