Here’s why your current ‘Preferred Supplier List’ model could lead to rogue spend... RFPs create static vendor ecosystems. Organizations often stick to 3 or 5-year schedules, assuming vendors are only evaluated during these periods. Yet, the talent economy is dynamic, with new players constantly emerging. Procurement teams are inundated with requests from new vendors eager to join their PSLs. However, the traditional RFP process, designed for cost efficiency and scope coverage rather than talent quality, often screens out emerging and boutique suppliers. Given these lengthy RFP cycles, many innovative vendors are forced to go rogue and end up operating outside program boundaries or Statement of Work (SOW). This is why building a long-lasting vendor relationship is important. I have seen many leaders stay with current vendors due to "connivance" but in the long run, that convenience was only due to a lack of time and resources to make a well-thought-out decision resulting in a bigger headache. I have met many Leaders who barely have time to get their morning coffee and catch up on their emails let alone have a 4-hour meeting for vendor selection.
