Today, PMC launched the schedule & speaking line-up for its 18th Annual Personalized Medicine Conference, which will take place from Nov. 12 - 14 at Harvard Medical School in Boston. This conference asks what scientific progress and broad-based access to personalized medicine could mean for patients and health care systems around the world. During the past two decades, new scientific discoveries, not to mention industry investments, have driven to the market thousands of innovative tests and therapies that promise to help direct the right preventive and treatment interventions to the right patients at the right times. But clinical practice gaps and access challenges are leaving too many patients without the benefits that personalized medicine would provide. By rallying academic researchers, investors, business leaders, and health system administrators around a shared vision for the future of the field, PMC believes this conference, organized as it is by the nonprofit Coalition with the support of its more than 200 member institutions, will help pave the way for the advancement of personalized medicine, which can vastly improve the delivery of health care. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine, we are creating a resource for thought leaders and innovators to study, implement, and scale innovations incorporating HSS that improve healthcare delivery. In this article, I discuss how health systems science (HSS) can improve clinical trials by examining how healthcare system components interact and influence patient care. By integrating policy, financial considerations, and emerging technologies like AI, HSS aims to create more equitable and effective health outcomes. This approach can lead to more inclusive and successful clinical trials. Such a treat to be the visiting professor all the way over at NYU yesterday for GI grand rounds. Such a pleasure to talk about research education and the importance of integrating our experiences into our projects and training, as well as some updates on SARsCoV2 GI complications and pandemic GI effects. We have a distinct tendency to track folks as research/no research, and I think that’s a mistake. Physicians add an immense amount to the translational research environment, because we see end results and weird events in a way investigators generally do not. By not being so siloed in an area we really can see patterns that may otherwise not be noticed. In fact, we do this all the time, with people having their own foibles in management approaches based on their experience. But we talk ourselves out of answering some of these questions, of following up on something weird systematically, engaging our colleagues from other disciplines to do something cool. By integrating our experiences into research education we not only ground the training in something fun and interesting, we help create actionable training in how to execute projects, and develop a culture where we expect our physicians to consider that when they see something odd. Not everyone needs to be R01 funded to add value to clinical care. In journalism they call this “service journalism” things like pieces about what’s good on Netflix these days. We can drive both improved research literacy AND improved data collection by pushing a culture of curiosity.
