The latest from OODA Loop contributor Emilio Iasiello: Recently, a prominent think tank offered up its recommendations for the next U.S. president to shore up the cybersecurity posture of the United States.??Titled?“Securing America’s Digital Future: A Bipartisan Cybersecurity Roadmap for the Next Administration”, the report provides nearly 40 recommendations to better position the country to address current and future cyber threats.??The underlying message driving the publication of this report is clear:??cybersecurity must be a priority for the next president regardless of which part of the aisle they represent.? This is important given that cybersecurity is party agnostic, and while targeting a particular party may influence how some threat actors go about their operations (e.g., nation-states, hacktivist proxies), there is little question that the nation’s cybersecurity should be paramount given the general acknowledgment that cyber technologies will only play an increasing role in the operations of both the public and private sectors effecting regular citizens worldwide. https://lnkd.in/gWwuXsMX

NIS 2 is Coming: How Will You Adapt? The NIS 2 Directive will soon reshape the cybersecurity landscape, and as of October 17, 2024, businesses of all sizes across Europe will be expected to strengthen their cyber resilience. No longer just a requirement for large enterprises, even smaller organizations will need to step up their defenses to protect not only themselves but also the broader economic and social fabric. On Tuesday, the 4th of June, the Office of the National Cyber Director at The White House has made a significant recommendation regarding cybersecurity regulation. In August 2023, they initiated a conversation with various industry stakeholders by releasing a request for information to enhance their understanding of the cybersecurity regulatory landscape. The response was impressive, with 86 submissions from a wide array of entities, including nonprofits, trade associations, and research organizations, representing 11 out of 16 critical infrastructure sectors. The Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA) recognized in a recent paper the shared responsibility of the public and private sectors in defending the U.S. #cyberinfrastructure. It finds that while federal cybersecurity policies are rapidly evolving—Executive Order 14028 and the White House’s March 2023 National Cybersecurity Strategy offer vivid examples—there is inconsistency in private sector #cybersecurity, posing a risk to businesses and #criticalinfrastructure. Titled, ‘Challenges and Opportunities of Enabling Information Sharing?’ the INSA paper promotes the importance of information sharing among private sector firms and offers practical recommendations for corporate leaders to enhance cybersecurity measures. By implementing the five suggested action steps, private sector firms can effectively improve their information-sharing capabilities. It also realizes that the national security and economic prosperity of the U.S. depends on the public and private sectors’ shared responsibility to defend its cyber infrastructure. Nearly 40% of US state CISOs believe that their cybersecurity budgets fall short of what they need to keep assets and citizens safe, according to a new report by Deloitte and the National Association of Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). More than a third do not have a dedicated?cybersecurity budget. Four of the 51 state CISOs surveyed revealed that their state IT budgets allocate less than 1% for cybersecurity.

Did you know Australia is officially a global leader in terms of cybersecurity capabilities and policy stance? That is absolutely true, by the way. Often, when we work with clients overseas, we encounter trivial cybersecurity issues from decades ago that we never see in Australia. With many exceptions, the demand for enterprise cybersecurity capabilities is far less in other countries than in Australia. For example, in Australia, a company will demand a SIEM with 300 capabilities, in other countries, most want to see email, firewall and EDR alerts, 3 capabilities instead of 300, for a similar cost. Credit goes to our government for enforcing useful regulations and to the very caring Australian culture.
