Our latest paper is a special one. It helps identify the challenges & nature of patients who are "in care" as versus those living with family. It compares prescribing practices & key clinical outcomes in the two groups. It highlights that care settings are an important confounder! This is a large study of 618 people with ID and epilepsy across 6 UK centres. Of these 338 were in professional care and 258 "at home". PwID in care setting over 40 had more complex clinical charecteristics, increased polypharmacy & antipsychotics prescribed but fewer seizures! URGENT: Keep government from closing a landmark clinical trial for schizophrenia As reported by?The Baltimore Sun?yesterday, the Maryland Department of Health, led by Dr. Laura Herrera Scott, has halted the only U.S. inpatient trial on ketogenic therapy for schizophrenia. After a 16-week review that revealed no health or safety concerns, the decision to shut down the study was based solely on the funding sources. Given the limited availability of federal funding for mental health research, studies like Dr. Kelly’s, funded by private foundations, are crucial. Among the dozen trials investigating ketogenic diets for serious mental illnesses, Dr. Kelly’s research stands out as the sole trial of ketogenic therapy for schizophrenia available to inpatients, who typically suffer the most severe symptoms. Roughly a dozen patients who had already volunteered were not allowed to participate after the study's closure. Isn't this a violation of patients' rights? Three patient advocacy organizations, including one representing 750 Maryland psychiatrists, wrote to the health department to protest the decision. The global prevalence of #eatingdisorders has doubled from 3.5% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018, posing serious #psychosocial, #health, and #economicburden. #Eatingdisorders disrupt various body systems and increase the risk of #mortality. #Prevention and #earlyintervention, such as media literacy and cognitive dissonance programs, are critical given the challenges in diagnosis and treatment. ?? Our study, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, demonstrates the #costeffectiveness of a #virtualintervention to prevent #eatingdisorders in young women. We evaluated the Body Project (vBP), a cognitive dissonance-based program, and found that it not only reduces the incidence of #eatingdisorders but also provides a significant #returnoninvestment. Investing in vBP can lead to substantial #savings in healthcare costs associated with treating #eatingdisorders. ?? Reflecting on the FDA advisory panel's recent decision regarding Lyko's MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, I feel both disappointment and renewed determination. This decision underscores the urgent need for greater education and equitable access to these promising treatments. Despite setbacks, psychedelic research is advancing rapidly. We are on the verge of FDA approval for groundbreaking psychedelic therapeutics that can transform mental health care.
