IVF is failing most women. The fundamental problem is that fertility is still shockingly poorly understood. But new research holds out hope of a revolution After louise brown was born in Manchester in July 1978, her parents’ neighbours were surprised to see that the world’s first “test-tube baby” was “normal”: two eyes, ten fingers, ten toes. In the 45 years since, in vitro fertilisation has become the main treatment for infertility around the world. At least 12m people have been conceived in glassware. An ivf baby takes its first gulp of air roughly every 45 seconds. ivf babies are just as healthy and unremarkable as any others. Yet to their parents, most of whom struggle with infertility for months or years, they are nothing short of miraculous. In a world where one person in six suffers from infertility, such successes are rightly celebrated. Less discussed are the problems of ivf. Most courses of treatment fail. That subjects women and couples to cycles of dreaming and dejection—and gives the fertility industry an incentive to sell false hope. The obstacle is a lack of progress in understanding the basic mechanisms that determine fertility. At last, however, the science is making headway, holding out more promise and less heartache for generations of parents to come.

Over 12 million IVF babies have been born worldwide, and over 2.5 million IVF cycles are being performed every year. IVF offers hope and a chance to individuals and couples, but it is never a guarantee. Every embryo doesn't equal a baby. 1 in 6 experience infertility, and this number continues to grow. Right now, IVF patients everywhere are terrified. We are also sad, heartbroken, angry, confused, worried, and so tired... If dealing with infertility wasn't hard enough, there is now this added heaviness and fear weighing on us. There are just so many unknowns, and as an IVF patient, it often feels like our rights are being questioned, taken away, and diminished. This isn't the first time we've had to fight as patients, and it's exhausting. The emotional impact of this is significant. What can we do? Vote, use our voice, support advocacy and fertility organizations, and stay up to date on what's happening. Black women experience the lowest success rates for IVF in the NHS, they start treatment later, and they are being excluded altogether due to inaccurate metrics (like BMI). “BMI is being used to rule people out of fertility treatment, and yet it is an index that was developed through a Eurocentric lens. Black women are being told they are obese and too unhealthy for IVF using a measurement that doesn’t even work for their bodies.” NHS-funded IVF cycles among patients under 40 in heterosexual relationships were found to have decreased across all ethnic groups, but funding decreased the most among Black patients, from 60% in 2019 to 41% in 2021. I spoke to women who have been through it to try to understand the complex systemic failings. One case study tells me her NHS fertility journey was marred by poor communication, inaccuracies and even neglect: "It’s a trap because if you react then you’re seen as the ‘angry Black woman’, but the alternative is to not advocate for yourself. ??Controversial opinion Let’s talk about Western medicine taking a blind eye to truly, *actually* investigating the root of WHY you’re not able to get or stay pregnant ?? I saw a post + comment the other day from 23 and 26 year old heterosexual, married women who used IVF to get pregnant + not bc of anatomical or genetic abnormalities As a woman and health practitioner, I have to ask…WHY? Why, WHY, WHY!?! ?? We should all be questioning and asking WHY? Why would a woman/couple in their early/mid 20s - who should be in peak reproductive years “need” assistance in getting pregnant? The answer is - we shouldn’t.????♀??? The medical system is taking you to the cleaners + profiting off that fact that you are sub-fertile (not really "infertile") and leading you to believe that this is your *only* option ?? ??But in reality, in 3 to 6 months, you can bring your body into a PRO-fertile state and conceive naturally or significantly improve your chances of, dare I say - your FIRST round of IVF, so you don’t have to go through multiple (failed) rounds ?? So if you’ve found yourself asking WHY and WHAT are my options? Listen, girlfriend - I’ve got you! ?? I have seen a shift from cure to prevention, as many people are wanting to take more control over their health. Looking for first step solutions ?? 2. Infertility rates are every 1 in 6 couples. Continuing to climb ??♂? 3. The onus is no longer on women. Men are responsible for 40-50% of infertility cases. Leaving this space open for addressing both. ??♂???♀? 4. There can be so much improvements. As written in this article, fertility treatments need to be better addressed. Not only are fertility treatment $$$ there could be some work done on how they are managed. ?? I look forward to seeing more innovative companies come out in the fertility space!

[New research] 70% of women haven't discussed fertility with their doctor There's a big gap in fertility education in the U.S., with many women lacking basic knowledge about their reproductive health. A new study from Inception Fertility / The Prelude Network found: - Communication breakdown: 70% of women (aged 18-40) haven't talked to their PCP or OB/GYN about their fertility - Regret & anxiety: 32% of millennial women wish they'd planned to conceive earlier, and 38% of all women fear future fertility problems. - Misconceptions debunked: The majority of women weren’t clear on some of the factors that impact fertility - for instance, "advanced maternal age" isn't the only factor, and male infertility is just as common (up to 50%!). This lack of open communication can lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety. Fertility isn't a one-size-fits-all topic, which is why we prioritize personalized care and support at Frame in collaboration with primary care doctors and OB/GYNs. The shaky reality of IVF – from a painful postcode lottery dictating your ability to have treatment on the NHS to the challenges of going through treatment while working – is something that you’ll be deeply familiar with, if you’ve ever taken that path. New data, though, has revealed another injustice at play, when it comes to the fertility intervention. There exist significant differences in the use and outcomes of fertility treatment over different ethnic groups. Though the average IVF birth rate per embryo transferred has increased across all groups, in 2020-21, Black patients between the ages of 18 and 37 had the lowest birth rates following the procedure, with Black patients aged 30-34 having an average birth rate of 23%, compared to 30% for mixed and white patients.
