Hiring a contractor is a huge step. You can do it with knowledge and confidence following these tips.

Okay, so you’re ready to take the plunge & hire a VA! But before you get to take that break… There’s still a couple things to do before that! Here’s a quick list of must-haves: ?Upload any pictures, files & docs you know your VA will need for work onto a Google Drive or Dropbox folder. ?Make sure the link is open for sharing with others (and actually share it ??) ?If you’re uncomfortable giving others your passwords - LastPass! Also, there’s lots of other 3rd party apps & sharing options that allow you to add people to your team and not leak any sensitive information. ?Have a communication channel that’s clear & open (Whatsapp, Voxer, E-mail or socials - pick one!) ?Set clear expectations & deadlines (best to have these things in writing, too!) ?Share your preferences, processes and, most of all, personality! Most VA’s love their work because they get to work shoulder-to-shoulder with amazing people they feel aligned with and wholeheartedly want to support their mission. So may the connection be as strong as your WiFi, and let’s get to work!????

Story time (and Public Service Announcement)! If you’re thinking of hiring an external team to build you a technical product, there are potential pitfalls you should be aware of. I’ll give you an example from my own career. I always think back to my experience working at Rent the Runway, one of my first real technical jobs. They had hired an outside team to build the initial version of their product, and we (as the in-house team) really struggled working with that team and with the product that they delivered. It lacked consistency, it lacked quality, and the outreach to the team was not met with enthusiasm. We spent a lot of time trying to reverse-engineer and figure out what had been done before, rather than being able to talk to the people who had done it. That experience showed me what kind of contracting company I DIDN’T want to start, when I founded Common Sense Software. It’s the reason we always do long contracts and have a maintenance relationship with our clients. We always build software to a quality that we would want to continue working on, and make sure that the in-house team has all the tools and information they need to succeed. My warning is this: If you’re thinking of hiring an external team to develop an initial version of your product, insist that they stick around and be able to document, support, and maintain their work, or you might be left having to rebuild it, just to make sense of it.

This week we've met up with Ryan Canby who is a Product Manager and works from our Toronto office (and sometimes from home, we're a hybrid company after all) ?? ?? How would your mom describe your job to her friends? He works with developers to figure out what the company should build. ?? And what is it you actually do? I compile customer feedback and company strategy into feature sets, enhancements, and new product lines and break down the deliverables for each into bite size pieces of value. Then, with the feedback from internal and external stakeholders, I prioritize those deliverables alongside fixes to the existing product. And after all of that I work with the development team and make sure they understand what the top priority of work is and what the outcome should be. ?? What is the best part about your job at Sign In Solutions? The best part of working at Sign In Solutions is by far the people. I love being able to trust that everyone has good intentions and there is no need to worry about company politics. ?? Where is your favorite place to work from? I'll say my favorite place to work is from the office, but in reality it is more about working near my colleagues, wherever that may be. Being able to quickly ask and answer questions in a 30 second conversation is always way better than back and forth over email or slack. Also the jokes always make it a fun time! ???? What is your primary reason for going to the office vs working from home? Working from home is way more convenient when my day is full of zoom meetings; I have my work desk set up exactly how I like it and there are no distractions (and no commute!). But working in the office is way better for interacting with my colleagues and just the cultural aspect of enjoying spending time with the people I work with. ?? If someone says they'll bring a treat to the office, what do you hope it is? I like being surprised. We have a thing on my team where we bribe each other with chocolate/treats if we are asking for something that is a little bit extra, so it is always fun to see exactly what the reward actually is.
