I invite you to listen to Prof Jennifer Freyd's acceptance speech for the American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award for Impact. Jennifer is an academic hero of mine and I nominated her for the award alongside Dr Jennifer Gomez and Prof Judith Herman. In her acceptance speech, Prof Freyd talks about the cost of conducting research in the service of preventing harm that challenges the status quo and sometimes goes against disciplinary norms. Research into violence against women and children often reveals uncomfortable truths. It often propels us to take action that puts us in a difficult position, and requires us to call out vested interests, contradictions and sometimes outright lies. This is the real work of anti-violence research. If your research findings are always congruent with established frameworks and modes of practice - and if all your opinions just happen to line up with the accepted status quo - perhaps it is time to ask yourself some tough questions. Higher education should focus solely on merit, academic grades, and community achievements… institutions receiving Federal funding will need to employ diversity tools ?? otherwise they shouldn’t be allowed to benefit from federal funding. Companies will in the long run continue to discriminate based on colonial biases for reasons of their own. Those companies receiving federal tax subsidies and fundings should employ diversity tools ?? otherwise they shouldn’t be allowed to benefit from federal funding.
