Yolanda Villegas it is so good that you came out of Day 1 of the Missouri Kansas Search and Staffing Association - MKSSA's Annual Conference with 100+ new friends, and were able to sharpen your skills to bring enhanced value to your clients. These four skills you highlighted significantly increase your own value proposition and enriches your personal and professional brand: ?Collaborative communication - "exercising all things to invite the other person into the conversation from the words we use... talk with people and not to them, share with people and don't tell them; to using our body language in a manner that creates openness and an inviting environment." ? Improved listening tools with Clients and Candidates - "Listen with the intent to understand and not just to reply." ? Teamwork - "pulling together with a common cause that only needs a small incremental and intentional purpose to deliver huge results in building teams." ? Doing this all with Authenticity - "Authenticity naturally attracts people to us and being authentic makes us more approachable and comfortable to be with and people will actively seek to spend more time with us." In early September I was fortunate enough to attend The OR Society Conference #OR66, which took place at Bangor University this year. For those of you who've never heard of it, operational research is the application of mathematical techniques to solve logistical problems and was used extensively during the World Wars (l think a link is attached to this post!) This conference was a wonderful opportunity to see work in the same field but across several industries, which I'd recommend to anyone who is on the fence about attending similar conferences. There were so many excellent talks at the conference, I couldn't even try to describe all of them, but I've tried to give a brief overview of my favourites: - President's address by Dr Gilbert Owusu focussed on the shape of operational research now and its possible future form. My favourite part of his address was the emphasis on the personal skills required for effective operational research; ‘It's easy to focus on the technique and not think about the "soft side"'. I have always found the OR Society focusses on more than other, related organisations like the RSS on promoting these skills and this was a nice reminder of that emphasis. - Plenary from Dr Jeroen Mulder discussing various applications of OR within AirFrance-KLM. I could feel lots of parallels to the flight industry and the health and care industry, particularly if we think about the many complex factors that impact the industry and the person-centred focus. - Strategic workforce modelling that colleagues in HEIW showed, looking to forecast future workforce using a system dynamics model. The model hopes to make projections up to 15 years into the future, to inform the commissioning of education to create that workforce. - ‘Grand challenges in OR’ workshop. This workshop was an opportunity to put our profession into practice in a completely different setting. We heard the story of the football club the North Wales Dragons, a club that was formed to increase wellbeing through football. The team wanted to find more of the options for assessing their impact and I was able to point them to assessment similar to PROMS/PREMS. It felt amazing to be able to help the club and lend some of my experience for another good cause. If this sounds like something that would interest you in future, there is a #Simulation workshop scheduled for the end of March and the European conference for #OR, #EURO25, is in Leeds in June 2025.

So many emotions this morning. Last night was nothing short of amazing. Beginning my second year of Presidency of the Knoxville Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute, we kicked the year off with our annual Awards Gala. My first time as president, back in 07-08, I was "in the middle" of everything surrounding the Gala...helping with design, signage, events, you name it. This time around, it was the opposite. Total opposite. Between the lingering effects of my cancer battle, the demands of the new job and the overload of moving my mother home from Florida, I had less than zero bandwidth to deal with any of it. Even worse, I've been so far on overload that a LOT of these kinds of details aren't even on my radar until it's too late. Enter the incredible tribe of friends that is my CSI Chapter. Amazing people like Geoffrey Cavalier, AIA, CSI, who has helped me stay focused, on task and kept me sane at times when I just wanted to walk away. Lauretta Cocke, one of my mentees back the first time around, who now is doing an amazing job with the City of Knoxville Codes Office. The biggest two names are my two rocks...the Dynamic Duo of our Chapter, Kathy Proctor and Suzan Jordan, who did a simply masterful job of...well...EVERYTHING with regard to pulling our event together and making it a success. People often ask me how hard it is to be a Chapter President and the answer is "it is not". The role of the President is to see the vision of the future, design the path and then hand out the strategic tasks while being a cheerleader. The rest will just magically happen. Not really "brain surgery"...just caring for your people and letting them care for you in return. And in all of my career, I've never seen such an incredible outpouring of support as what I witnessed last night. As I said on my FB post, I'm humbled. Incredibly. Let's make this next year a huge success. Let's roll, Pop. #CSI #leadership #team
