In my previous posts, I shared insights about the importance of adopting a CRM early on. Today, let's talk about another crucial aspect of professionalizing your operations: onboarding. A well-structured onboarding process creates a sense of belonging for new employees, ensuring they feel welcomed and integrated into the company culture. I experienced this firsthand at @Amogy. I joined Amogy as employee number 35. We operated from one location in Brooklyn. Nine months later, we were a company of 100+ employees, operating in two buildings in Brooklyn, two countries (USA and Norway), and two US cities (NYC and Houston). Growing at that pace, we had to be intentional about developing an onboarding program that would allow new hires to feel welcome and embedded in the company, have access to information and tools to ramp up and own their work, and benefit from onboarding irrespective of their location. Let’s talk about how to create a stellar employee onboarding experience! ?? Just started on my fourth week here at Mews, and here's what they did right: 1. ???? Face-to-face introductions (before even starting!): Meeting many of my team members in Amsterdam before starting was a game-changer. In a remote-first global company, it can be daunting to start without having met anyone. They made the most of the fact that a lot of the team would be in one place close to the time I was joining and invited me along. 2. ?? Synchronised start dates: All new starters begin together, face-to-face, building great relationships with those on the same timeline, and saving the company time on repetitive onboarding sessions. 3. ?? Dedicated onboarding days: We had three days solely focused on onboarding without the pressure of immediate work tasks. The whole company knows this and respects it. 4. ??Interactive presentations: Leaders presented in person and encouraged questions, creating a safe space for curiosity and open dialogue. (Sorry, I know I asked a lot...) 5. ?? Fun and engaging: From evening outings to a scavenger hunt around Prague, it wasn’t all work and no play! These in-person elements set me up for success in a remote-first environment. Starting at Mews, I felt ready to hit the ground running, I understood the company culture, and how Mews works, with some new friends by my side. ?? Contemplating the habits and rituals that shape company culture, my mind drifts back to my time at RightNow Technologies. The lasting impact of the culture, whether you were there briefly or for an extended period, is something truly unforgettable. Upon joining RNT, each new employee embarked on a unique journey—flown to the headquarters in Bozeman, Montana, for an immersive two-week onboarding experience. This intensive program covered everything from company operations and product technical training to competitive intelligence and go to market. What truly distinguished this onboarding experience was the personal touch. Greg Gianforte, the driving force behind RightNow's success, extended a genuine invitation to his home for dinner to every new employee cohort. Far beyond a mere formality, these gatherings provided an intimate space for open discussions, shared visions, and the free exchange of ideas. RightNow Technologies (later acquired by Oracle), wasn't just a company; it was a profound experience, a chapter in my journey that I hold dear. While culture extends beyond onboarding and dinners, these practices demonstrated a commitment to investing in people, ensuring each employee took off on the best possible trajectory. It was these people-first practices (and many more) that forged a truly exceptional workplace and culture. The takeaway is not replicate this exact practice (although, if your company operations can support it, in-person onboarding can be amazing), the takeaway is to think about your company values. It's W8 / Q2 / 2024 & this week in our MGMT Boston startup series we’ve got Blink, a growth stage startup building a better workplace experience platform for desk based employees to connect with their deskless colleagues who spend their days out in the world, fixing our problems and servicing our needs - and traditionally are hard to reach. Blink is helping employers uplevel their internal cultural experience and help employers better understand how their disparate workers are thinking & feeling. In the U.S. there are more than 40M frontline workers with deskless workers encompassing 37% of the total workforce. These are employees in industries like healthcare, retail, manufacturing, higher education, utilities & transportation. Eighteen months ago they made the decision to expand from the UK to the US. Founder Sean Nolan moved to Boston and hired CRO Jim McInerny to build out the team. In the months since they’ve added local leadership like Sloan Kendall from Gainsight, Marcy Paterson from ServiceNow, and Amanda Haltmaier from HubSpot. Blink counts almost 20 employees locally here in Boston. In the coming quarters they plan to roll out their workforce insights & frontline intelligence product. AI generated questions will help dig into employee concerns and feed the insights back to HQ where executives can diagnose and solve turnover challenges. Blink is diligently co-developing these new features with current customers. In Boston they’re strong in the EMS sector so ambulance personnel at companies like Cataldo & Action Ambulance aren’t rushing back to the office after saving peoples lives to file paperwork! Even the MBTA is a customer. In 2023 Blink grew U.S. top line revenue by 159% and welcomed 52 new customers, now counting over 100 enterprise customers. In 2024 they will continue to focus on the U.S., its fastest growing market, planning to double the size of their U.S. headcount over the next 12 months. For Sean, Boston has been the best combination for a European founder - easy commutability home to the UK, time zone overlap, a great culture, and access to top talent as an Enterprise SaaS startup. And on a personal note,? it felt like a great place to raise a family building a startup for the long haul.
