Fall hiking in Colorado can be fantastic! With fewer crowds, less traffic (until ski season!), and no bugs, it’s a great time to hit the trails before it gets too cold! I like going up into Estes to see the leaves change or going up into Keystone when the weather gets cooler because the river water levels go down and it's safer to play along the river. Also, the drive into Steamboat is gorgeous. Just remember to stay prepared with these tips: ?? Dress in Layers: Colorado weather can be unpredictable. Layering helps keep you warm and dry throughout your hike. ?? Stay Hydrated: Carry a refillable water bottle and consider packing a warm beverage for those chilly fall mornings. ?? Every summer, a visitor to Arizona dies on a hiking trail! A few days ago, it happened to a 10-year-old (news link below). Being outdoors in the desert heat, let alone exercising, should be taken with extreme caution! The desert heat is serious and can be fatal. Many hiking trails have some elevation gain, which can raise a heart rate more than "mere walking." If you (or someone you know) insists on hiking in extreme conditions (as my hiking pals and I sometimes do), please take extra precautions like these: ????? Warning: Hiking in Extreme Heat Can Be Fatal ????? As the summer heat intensifies, hiking can become dangerously risky. Extreme temperatures can lead to severe dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. Crucial tips to stay safe: Avoid Midday Hikes: The sun is most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. Plan your hikes for early morning or late evening. Hydrate Constantly: Dehydration can set in quickly. Drink water regularly, not just when you're thirsty. Bring more water than you think you'll need. Dress Smart: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes and a wide-brimmed hat. Apply and reapply sunscreen frequently. Know the Signs: Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. Heat stroke can cause confusion, fainting, and a rapid pulse. If you or a companion experience these, seek shade and medical help immediately. Plan Ahead: Choose shorter, shaded trails and inform someone about your hiking plans.
