RCVS Council - more lay members? The RCVS has made a valid point in its consultation that 'we should not be seen to mark our own homework'. The RCVS proposed solution is to maintain Council numbers of 24 while increasing the number of lay representatives so there is parity with professionals. This is at odds with its stated aim to appoint professionals so there is wider representation. With a reduction from 18 to only 12 professionals (to achieve parity with lay members) it is difficult to see how diverse areas of the profession can be represented. Perhaps a better approach might be to ensure 50% lay representation where there is the need, such as regulatory sub-committees, by reducing committee size to 12. This would allow the numbers of professionals on Council to be maintained at the current level of 18. By maintaining this number there is the opportunity for wider representation, whether paraprofessionals, regional or specific disciplines being represented.

RCVS Council - elected or appointed? Good Governance proposals direct the profession towards an appointed Council. This approach has the support of the RCVS who see it as compatible with the Government approach to other professional bodies. We should approach with caution. The GMC is an appointed body and appears to have lost the trust of many doctors. This is due to the GMC following Government wishes for widening the workforce with associate professionals (semi-qualified doctors) and more recently accelerating access with shortened degree courses. While there would be a selection process for a new RCVS appointed Council, most important is who sits on the selection panel. Alternatively a Government influenced RCVS appointed body could implement unwelcome changes that weaken our profession and control over our own destiny? With an elected Council, the whole membership selects the Council representatives, having had every chance to assess individual merits.

This week, we feature some beautiful footage from the IMSA 12h at Sebring, a track renowned for its challenging bumps. ? This footage isn’t just a treat for the eyes; it’s a practical lesson in vehicle dynamics! One of the things to observe is a great demonstration of the vehicle showing itself to be an an over-constrained system. With four wheels, it has one more than necessary to manage its six degrees of freedom and maintain equilibrium. Consequently, a bump affecting the vertical load at one wheel directly impacts the other three, creating a complex interplay of forces that influence the vehicle’s state. ? This behaviour can be fine-tuned through adjustments to spring stiffness and damping rates. ? Beyond sensor data, observing these dynamics in action really offers some profound insights into performance, Reminding us that sometimes, our own eyes are the best tools for understanding the principles of vehicle dynamics.
