Today is National Hire a Veteran Day. I want to clarify that hiring a veteran is not just an act of charity or compensation; it's a valuable investment. So who are you hiring? A graduate of the University of the US Army or United States Space Force. Or maybe somebody with a Bachelors from US Navy or United States Air Force State. Or maybe a person sporting a masters from the esteemed U.S. Coast Guard or United States Marine Corps. Consider each military branch as an individual institution of learning, where each veteran has completed a distinctive curriculum that encompasses particular knowledge, duties, and expertise. However, they all share a fundamental set of skills (#CommonCore) including collaboration, leadership, accountability, punctuality, professionalism, service orientation, personal growth, and a range of general duties, among other attributes that continue to expand. Avoid focusing solely on the role they performed in uniform. Instead, consider hiring them for the multitude of tasks they undertook to master a mission, lead a team, and achieve success while wearing the uniform. Invest in their potential for growth, learning, and mentorship, both presently and going forward. Help our veterans find what they can do instead of only what they did in the uniform. #BeyondServiceRoles #HireAVeteran

In my conversations with veterans here is what I have heard about the civilian transition: Civilians have no frame of reference for your achievements. You have to explain the significance of your military experience in terms that civilians can understand. Extreme example: "I commanded the fifth fleet in the middle east". As a civilian I understand that this person has a great deal of responsibility, but what exactly is the corporate equivalent? - Regional manager? - Director? - Billion dollar CEO? If you want to hire from the military, have a servicemember on your HR team. They will have an intuitive sense of this person's responsibilities and capability. They'll afford the applicant the appropriate respect and help your team make attractive offers to veterans whose skills won't get through your ATS screening process, but will make them incredible at their job.

Military Transitioning Tip: if someone asks what you did in the Marine Corps (or Army, Air Force, etc), avoid saying numbers. As with resumes, your goal should always be to translate your experience to civilian speak. Your average American did not serve in the military. Of those that did, most of us have not memorized every MOS code. Translate your MOS to an actual job title. And while it may seem silly, because, sure, I could just ask you “what does that mean,” it’s indicative of greater concerns. When I’m looking to hire someone, I want them to have strong communication skills. Strong communication skills require understanding your audience and accepting that your audience does not know every MOS code, billet title, and abbreviation. Whether in conversation or in reading your resume, most hiring managers are going to be so overwhelmed with candidates, they’re not going to do the work to translate your experience to determine its relevance. Taken from a fellow Veteran who attended a work convention for her component… “18 million people apply for a position on USA Jobs a year and only 250 thousand people are hired annually.” I guess the real question is, do you have a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your corner? Why is having a SME regarding USAJOBS in your corner important? Well, by learning from someone else’s experience, you have an opportunity to make less mistakes, focus on what is relevant, and to learn about upwardly mobile positions that you had no idea existed. Just ask the many transitioning Service Members, Veterans, and Military Spouses that received some sort of consultation or job lead from yours truly. Having worked in sales myself at RecruitMilitary, I’m definitely a bit biased—but I’m struck by how naturally military experience aligns with sales. Today I'm working our front desk at Veterans Bridge Home, I'm listening to a group of Marine Corps Recruiting station commanders (who manage United States Marine Corps recruiters), I realized just how shared our language is: #prospects, #overcomingobjections, #pipeline, #candidates, #valueprop, #funnel. These concepts are second nature to #Veterans, who are used to navigating complex operational challenges and building relationships under high-stakes conditions.
