Getting renewable energy onto the grid is a challenge for industry experts around the world. Which is why we welcomed the board of the Swedish Wind Energy Association (SWEA) and Enterprise Ireland at EirGrid HQ recently to discuss the work EirGrid has been doing to integrate renewable energy onto the grid ? SWEA represent some of the key players in the Nordic energy industry, such as ?rsted, RES Renewable Norden, Vestas Wind, Vattenfall, LKAB and BlackRock Investments, among others. Ireland continues to be a world leader in this challenging area, in recent years, increasing the amount of renewables we can have on the grid at any one time from 50% to 75%. The collaborative effort of EirGrid and SONI, as well as other industry stakeholders, has been at the heart of this increase and will be further relied upon as we aim to operate at levels of up to 95% by 2030. The plan for this, our Operational Policy Roadmap, and the Shaping Our Electricity Future Roadmap, were presented to our invited guests at this meeting. Vestas has announced five separate deals, with the colossal 252MW order for their V163-4.5MW turbines from an undisclosed US customer leading the charge. Success as a motivator, not a stop sign ???? Last year, Europe saw a significant boost in the share of renewable energy in electricity production, reaching an impressive 43%. This is an increase of 11% compared to the previous year. Wind energy contributed the largest portion to this growth, solidifying its position as the leading source of clean energy across the continent. Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels continues to decline. In 2023, it accounted for only 32.7% of Europe's electricity production, down from 37% in 2020 and a significant drop from 50% in 2010. While these trends are promising, our journey towards a fully sustainable energy future is far from over. Renewable energy is growing rapidly across Europe, with Scandinavia and Iberia, which started earlier, having the highest percentages and benefiting from much lower energy prices (approximately 4 to 5 times less). Germany is still in transition; the transformation is accelerating, renewable power capacity is growing quickly, but fossil fuel power generation remains significant. In two to three years, power prices in Germany are expected to decrease significantly. We now need to harness the potential curtailment offers and produce the power we are not generating today when there is excess sun or wind.
