How did I transition from TPM to Senior Product Manager as a mid-career professional? ?? Madhumita Mantri, Senior Product Manager (Data) PayPal, shared with us her journey and learnings. ?? About me: I am a techno-creative Data R&D Product Manager, enjoy solving problems for data users (consumers and producers) to deliver successful user and business outcomes by unlocking data potentials.? Outside of work, I enjoy building my non-profit start-up (AIForEveryone.org), coaching, karaoke and dance (Bollywood, Jazz and HipHop dance styles)????. ?? My Journey to Product Management: Programming ?? CRM & Business Intelligence ?? Data? TPM ?? Sr PM (Data) I built my first product “walking & talking robot” before knowing what a product was during my engineering school. My intent was to help disabled people to navigate easily with robot assistance. This experience helped me realize I love building products.? After finishing school, I spent a few years in software programming then moved to building and architecting CRM and Business Intelligence products. Then I joined LinkedIn where I learnt to launch products from incubation to full growth and use data and AI to build great products for consumers.? Since my days in a small town in India, I have achieved a lot and became an increasingly confident, effective product professional. As part of my transformation journey I co-founded AIForEveryone.org to create a level playing field for underprivileged individuals and non-profits to easily learn and apply AI. I never regretted my journey into PM and I consider myself a builder and a growing business PM: someone who loves being hands on, building products, and leading teams on product strategy and ideation. ?? Things that worked for me for my transition: ?? Validate: Talk to PMs, leaders, mentors, and sponsors to quickly validate if Product Management is something for me. Special thanks to Julia Kastner, Blair Presley, MBA, CPM and Shyvee Shi for believing in me, coaching and enabling me to go after my dream job ??). ?? Calibrate: Identify and close critical skills gaps (Thank you Product Mastermind, Exponent, Product School, University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business, and LinkedIn Learning). ?? Build: Look for opportunities to wear the product hat: whether is working on side gigs or finding product opportunities at your current company or helping your product partners.? ?? Network: Build a strong network by joining several product communities, product groups and reaching out to product professional on LinkedIn. Mid-career transition was not easy. Despite all the challenges, I thank my mentors, sponsors, managers, leaders, colleagues, friends, and family who helped to make it possible! ?? *** ??
