Online shopping is seriously broken. Think about the last time you discovered a new fashion brand online. If your experience is anything like mine, it’s easier to imagine scratching your head for the right keywords, clicking through pages of dead links and irrelevant search results, and navigating hundreds of open tabs from a dozen different websites. At Index, we believe AI will transform online discovery and inspiration in the same way e-commerce transformed retail. Just imagine a more curated online shopping experience, similar to stepping into your favorite retail store. You can talk to someone, get personalized recommendations, and just feel inspired browsing the racks. A few months ago, I got early access to?Daydream's?new AI-powered online shopping platform. Led by industry titan?Julie Bornstein, it allows users to describe what they’re looking for in natural language, delivering personalized results from close to 2,000 retailers. The first time I logged on, I told it I wanted sneakers that would look good with jeans, and that wouldn’t make my feet too hot. To my surprise, it responded first with a helpful explanation of why certain shoes make you hot. Then it returned a range of results that fit my exact criteria. Within 15 minutes I was checking out with a pair of Nikes I’d been trying to find for 2+ years. What will #GenAI magic look like for Fashion eCommerce? An AI Shopping Assistant will be a winner in the fashion category for a few reasons. While app eCommerce caters well to the need for shopping, it doesn't cater well to the emotional and social side of fashion shopping. I realized that not only do you want to buy what you think looks good, but you also want reassurance that what you are buying is part of the latest trend. Consumers want to be reassured that what they are buying is trending, in fashion, discounted, and fits the occasion they are buying for. They also want to ensure that their choice fits their personal style. Can an app interface offer this reassurance? Maybe not. But, a #GenAI shopping assistant certainly can.

Moin Roberts-Islam has only gone and done it! A first fresh take and knowledge drop in a succinct article on some of the new and old developments in the fashion/tech space. My favourite part to look out for in the coming months/ years is customisation through the use of these new tools, as Moin Roberts-Islam writes "scanning your own face and body at home, using a mobile device, to create a virtual version of yourself for online shopping". This in itself might feel far away, however, we are already using virtual try-on with beauty brands like Maybelline New York and fashion brands like Coach and Tommy Hilfiger. The next step to connect Ecom to this in a way that you can instantly view yourself online wearing garments or accessories, using this try-on selection data to better enhance consumer shopping behaviour could be a huge win for big Ecom platforms. Most likely brands that are DTC have the biggest opportunity initially and luxury outlets like Mytheresa, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a tech giant like Zalando moving more towards this.
