Nick A. lost the ability to communicate at age 17 after a severe brain injury. However, 24 years later, he has found his voice thanks to assistive technology. His speech-language pathologist and occupational therapist at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab designed a customized device that Nick uses to express discomfort, hunger or a desire for a specific activity like listening to music — all by nodding his head to activate a switch mounted on the back of his wheelchair headrest. As we recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month, read Nick’s full story to learn how assistive technology enables communication after injury: bit.ly/3F2JZqm #BrainInjuryAwareness #AssistiveTechnology #SpeechTherapy #CommunicationAids #BrainInjurySupport #EmpowermentThroughTech
