Over the last 6 years, Mayor Lee Harris and Shelby County Government have implemented paid parental leave for all employees, initiated the Child and Senior Care Benefit for Working Families, offered a new tuition reimbursement program, and NOW passed a 6% raise for all employees without increasing taxes for County residents. Programs like these have helped to make Shelby County Government #OneOfTheBestPlacesToWork. DuPage County Board Chair Deborah Conroy and the County Board have announced a new policy providing 12 weeks of paid parental leave. Effective immediately, all full-time and part-time employees who have worked for the County for at least one year will be eligible to take leave to care for a newborn child or for adoption of a child younger than 18. "Providing this benefit to our County employees is an important step in supporting the well-being of our workforce," Conroy said. "This policy will allow new parents to take the time they need to bond with their child without financial stress. We're investing in our staff’s personal and professional success and ensuring that DuPage County can attract and retain great employees."

Statutory pay doesn’t cover the bills. For many dads, it’s a choice between: ?? Being present at home… or ?? Rushing back to work. This isn’t just outdated. It’s harmful. Unpaid care work is essentially unpaid labor, where individuals, predominantly women, take on responsibilities to care for others or manage household tasks without compensation. This encompasses a range of activities, including childcare, household management, and other domestic duties, which are vital to the well-being of families and communities, yet often go unrecognized and unrewarded.The burden of unpaid care work can restrict an individual's capacity to pursue educational opportunities, career advancement, and personal aspirations, thereby perpetuating gender-based disparities and socioeconomic inequalities. By shouldering these responsibilities without compensation or recognition, individuals, disproportionately women, face barriers to achieving their full potential and contributing to the economy and society in more meaningful ways. To what extent do Ugandan courts recognize and consider the contributions of unpaid care work, typically undertaken by women, when determining property distribution, custody, and maintenance in divorce cases?

It's great to see this new research out today from Joanna Clifton-Sprigg and colleagues looking at whether Shared Parental Leave is working as intended. Having stuggled myself with the complexity and eligibility rules of the policy when I was looking into it, I'm not surprised by the stark conclusion of this study: it has fallen flat, neither affecting the number of fathers taking leave, nor the length of leave they choose to take. Hopefully this work will help towards reforming the policy so it becomes much more attractive and much less byzantine in the future. https://lnkd.in/dYK3uQDx
