?? Embracing Education for Change ?? As we walk forward into unknown territory, let's carry with us the wisdom of those who've paved the way. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, 'Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.' This profound statement echoes the essence of our event's mission: to merge education with the moral courage to advocate for civil rights and equality. Let this quote inspire us today. Reflect on how education shapes not just our minds but our characters, driving us to act with integrity and purpose. ?? What quotes inspire you to pursue knowledge and justice? "Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." "I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history." "Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself." "A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law." A cultural force of the 19th Century, social reformer Henry George stirred millions to demand economic equity in the face of rapidly expanding economic divides between society's haves and havenots. More than a century later, George's teachings could not be more relevant, and his central policy prescription - the Land Value Tax - is in the news again, as major U.S. Cities like Detroit, MI, consider its adoption. But what was the central insight of this revolutionary thinker? How did a man of humble beginnings and limited formal education go on to influence the thinking of such intellectual and cultural giants as Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King, JR? Join RSF Board Member and Henry George scholar, Steve Sklar, as he explores George's teachings on the persistent and perverse relationship between progress and poverty in this one hour, free webinar. I am extremely pleased to announce our new book, Dream and Legacy, Volume II: Revisiting King in the Post-Civil Rights Era. I am beyond thrilled that the release of Dream and Legacy, Volume II: Revisiting King in the Post-Civil Rights Era, marks my fifth book as both author and editor, a true career milestone for me. As an update and expansion of our original volume, this book, at just under 500 pages, applies the ideology and activism of Dr. King to our analysis of contemporary sociopolitical issues in the United States and abroad. The book begins with a foreword that situates the subsequent essays within the context of contemporary social developments. Grouped into themed sections, each chapter cover such topics as voting rights, public protest, police brutality, poverty and wage discrimination, healthcare, and more. And, this goes without saying, but, you may now purchase Dream and Legacy, Volume II: Revisiting King in the Post-Civil Rights Era, wherever you shop for books, including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. https://lnkd.in/epYZxtDZ #CivilRights #MLK #PublicPolicy #Race #Racism

?? Today, we recall ‘When We Fight We Win!,’ a written collection of activists who have devoted their lives to fighting injustice. Using history and personal stories as the foundation of discovery, authors Greg Jobin-Leeds and AgitArte (@agitarte_cultural_works) challenge us to think critically about our place in the world and how we relate to systems of power. Today’s #RRR quote unveils the historical impact of mass incarceration in the U.S. The LP’s residencies, fellowships, and public programs consider art as a catalyst for challenging the historical systems of oppression our communities face. Through knowledge exchange and creative engagement, we advocate for the health and well-being of POC communities. ? Reflect & Share: How do you use creativity to combat systems of oppression? If you are looking for some good books to read in the first half of 2024, here are some recommendations. Here is a high-level synopsis on a few of these titles: Einstein -- A truly inspiring story of initial genius deferred but never denied - despite adversity, he utilized his theoretical training and skills as a patent office clerk to change the way we look at light, atoms and gravity. Hidden Potential -- One of my favorite author's, Adam Grant, explores the fallacy of innate vs. "learned" skills -- from the ability to speak multiple languages to alternative education systems - where teachers stay with the same class of students over time. Think Bigger -- CBS Prof. Iyengar (shout-out to my alma mater!) lays out a framework to ensure that your innovative process builds on existing ideas and addresses the most valuable and solvable challenges. King - Despite impossible odds and his own fears, Martin Luther King Jr. heeded the call for greatness and inspired a nation to honor its own creed. The author shows that Dr. King drew strength from his humanity and faith to lead a movement for the rights of African Americans and the underserved. Thanks for all the previous suggestions. If you have any more book recommendations, please let me know. I am always looking for the next one. #Robinsonbooks #ChasingGreatness
