E-bikes can provide transformational mobility access and independence for people reentering society after incarceration. We’re proud to partner with Tomorrow’s Neighbors in their Ride 2 Work program - giving people access to e-bikes for commuting to work, attending appointments, and reaching other essential destinations in #Carslile , PA. Kurt Danysh, Director of Tomorrow’s Neighbors said on the program, “It’s not just about getting from point A to point B – it’s about improving people’s lives holistically. The Ride 2 Work program helps people stay healthier, reduces stress, and makes their lives a little easier.” To learn more, read our blog post by Shane Paul - who managed this initiative on behalf of SMI. #EBikeLibraries #Equity #SharedMobility #CommunityImpact https://lnkd.in/ePqQRYnb

Creating communities that embrace and support the homeless is a cause close to my heart. It's about more than just providing shelter; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and dignity for all. Firstly, I believe in the power of 'Housing First' models. These prioritize giving the homeless a stable place to live, without preconditions. From there, we can offer tailored support services. It's a compassionate approach that has seen success in various UK cities. Secondly, community integration is key. We should encourage local businesses and residents to get involved with initiatives that support the homeless. This could be through mentorship programs, employment opportunities, or simply by creating spaces where everyone is welcome to spend time together. Lastly, we must address the stigma surrounding homelessness. Education and awareness campaigns can go a long way in changing perceptions and fostering empathy. When we understand the myriad of reasons behind homelessness, we can create more effective support systems. Your thoughts and experiences are invaluable. How can we, as a community, further these ideas? #Homelessness #CommunitySupport #Inclusion #vetro #vetrorecruitment

Anna Zivarts points out that how important it is for planning departments to have representation from involuntary as well as voluntary nondrivers. In her excellent new book When Driving Is Not An Option, she describes voluntary nondrivers as “people who have the financial resources, immigration status, and physical ability to own and drive a vehicle but choose not to.” While she makes a strong case for a coalition that includes both voluntary and involuntary drivers, her book highlights “the expertise and lived experience … that comes from involuntary non-drivers, with an emphasis on the expertise of low-income, Black, Brown, immigrant, and disabled people, caregivers, and queer and trans people.” And she does a superb job of bringing us the insights from this wealth of expertise. #carDependency

We know that carers of children with disability play an invaluable role in our society, providing round-the-clock care and support that is often under-recognised and undervalued. That’s why I was so pleased to see the Federal Government prioritise efforts to update its vision for carers, based on in-depth consultation with unpaid carers, former carers and the wider support sector on how to best support carers. Minister Rishworth recently released the?National Carer Strategy 2024-2034,?which outlines Commonwealth’s plan to improve the lives of Australia’s unpaid carers. Kindred has been working on behalf of families to?address the unique and complex challenges faced by carers of children with disability.?We shared thoughts and ideas from parents and carers in our community, offering insights into their experiences, challenges and needs. We were pleased to see many of our practical recommendations reflected in the final Strategy.?This includes the?need for increased financial support, improved access to respite care, better mental health support and greater recognition of the carer role. We look forward to working with Minister Amanda Rishworth to bring this Strategy to life, delivering effective and achievable measures that can significantly enhance the lives of unpaid carers. Today, the Australian Government released the National Carer Strategy 2024-2034. Carers are an essential and important part of the Australian community – supporting, advocating for and empowering the people they provide care for. The Strategy acknowledges the immense contribution of Australia’s unpaid carers to the community and explains where efforts will be prioritised – making sure carers feel heard and recognised. The Strategy aims to improve awareness of carers, their roles, the impacts of supporting others and availability of carer supports and services. The Meath community is calling for your help to appeal against the planned train station platform gate closure. This closure will have a serious impact on our staff, volunteers, and residents ????, especially those who use wheelchairs or have reduced mobility. Closing the gate will: ?? Add extra walking time for staff, volunteers and residents of The Meath when accessing the station. ??♂? Create a dangerous route for wheelchair users who will be forced onto the road due to narrow pavements just before a blind turning under a railway bridge. ?? People with reduced mobility will be disadvantaged by having to use steep, slippery steps. Please support #Godalming residents and sign the petition to stop this closure. Share widely with your friends, family, and community ??: https://chng.it/qXk2BBCMr9 Let’s make sure safety and inclusion come first! #Ability #Disability #RoadSafety #Godalming #Epilepsy #SupportMeath #AccessibilityMatters #WheelchairAccess #SupportOurCommunity #SafeTravelForAll #InclusiveTransport #MobilityRights #EqualAccess #CommunitySafety #AdvocateForChange #SupportLocal #Inclusion #Abilitynotdisability #roadsafety #petition

Did you know 15.3% of Queenslanders identify as carers? That’s 642,200 carers or 1 in 8 people, dedicating their lives to care for others. ?? But who is a carer? Unlike disability support workers and aged care workers, carers provide unpaid support and care to family members, friends or people in the community. For some, caring is a short-term commitment whilst for others, it is a role that lasts a lifetime. In the lead up to #CarersWeek2024, we are shining a light ??on the diversity of carers and their caring roles. A carer can also be a parent, child, family member, friend, partner, employee and come from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. If you think you are a carer, find out how we can support you: https://lnkd.in/guqmWs_T

?? Today is Carers Rights Day, and it's all about recognising your rights as a carer. Often, when we're trying to balance work with caring responsibilities, we might not see ourselves as carers. Amy's honest account of how she achieved a better work-life balance, thanks to the support from Carers First, will resonate with many. Let today be the day you recognise your rights. #CarersRightsDay #CarersRightsDay2024 #CarersFirst
With one day until #CarersRightsDay2024, we are sharing Amy's story. Amy was thankful to receive help from #CarersFirst, as she was previously struggling to balance her full-time job with caring for her husband who has serious health conditions. Our #CarersFirst team helped Amy to recognise her rights as a carer, informing her of her right to flexible working, as well as creating a Carer's Passport, which has enabled her to feel confident and empowered in communicating her needs to her employer. Stories like this amplify the need for carers to understand their rights, so that they can advocate for themselves in all kinds of settings. Carers Rights Day 2024?? We join the movement to support unpaid carers and raise awareness about their rights. Every day, 12,000 people step into the role of a carer, often without even realising it. Many are unaware of the legal rights and benefits available to them, which can lead to feelings of isolation and overwhelm. ?? At Guardian Angel Carers Bournemouth, we believe that understanding your rights is vital to your well-being as a carer. This year’s theme, "Recognising Your Rights," is a call to action for all carers to empower themselves with knowledge about what they are entitled to ? For in-depth information on your rights as a carer, we encourage you to check out this insightful article from Carers UK: https://bit.ly/4fcrHPY. Remember, you are not alone! Knowing your rights can give you the confidence to seek the support you need, whether it’s accessing health services, navigating workplace policies, or understanding benefits ?? #CarersRightsDay #Rights #GuardianAngelCarers #SupportCarers #Bournemouth

Today is Carers Rights Day and it feels like the perfect time to reflect on the work that Carers Trust and Carers UK have done to support carers, especially those who are traditionally underserved by carer support services. Over the past couple of years, I have been working with Sally Cupitt on an evaluation of their Making Carers Count programme. Based on data from this evaluation, together with Ben O'Hanlon and some brilliant carers services around the UK, we developed a series of good practice guides designed to help organisations and services better support carers. It was a rewarding process to pull together these guides as they were rooted in evidence and practical insights from the evaluation. The titles of the guides are: ?? Developing an inclusive organisation ?? Creating more inclusive spaces for carers ?? A whole family approach to supporting carers ?? Working in partnership to better identify and support carers ?? Developing young adult carer services – a practical guide Carers play such important and often challenging roles. And it’s so important that support services meet their needs, particularly for those who often face barriers to accessing help. I’m hopeful these guides can contribute to making a difference in the lives of carers and their families. https://lnkd.in/ehHET7kJ #CarersRightsDay #Evaluation
