Ideas come from problems need solutions but if the solution has a bad execution this will make it worser! This is why it's so important to pay attention to every step of the process, from the initial idea all the way through to the final implementation because very detail matters. Effective project management is a delicate balancing act between ideation and execution. The following are key factors in delivering a successful final product: ?? Pay attention to details: The devil is in the details, going through small details can make a huge difference in the user experience and ultimately determine whether the project is successful or not. ?? Consistency: Maintaining a consistent level of effort and attention throughout the project, from ideation to delivery, is crucial for ensuring that the final product meets the desired expectations. ?? Iterate, iterate, iterate: Be open to feedback and continuously refine your ideas to ensure that they align with user needs and business goals. Neglecting any of these can result in a project that fails to meet its full potential, or worse, leads to failure. A holistic and focused approach is essential to ensure that an idea is effectively communicated, refined, and ultimately executed to its fullest potential. What is your biggest professional nightmare fellow UX designers and developers? … For me, it is working on a project without having a discovery phase. Trust me, I had multiple experiences of such hell: team members had a hard time aligning with each other, sales and marketing teams had a hard time selling. But why would someone overlook the discovery phase, this very vital part of building a digital product? Sometimes it’s the desire to start as soon as possible and save money: “Why waste time on discovery and documentation?” Of course, the teams I met were falling into the trap of believing that they "know exactly what they're building.” However not all the team members had the same vision of the product, and most importantly, they failed to have a conversation with potential customers who should have been invited to join the discovery sessions: The consequence often was the inability to create a product that aligns with user needs. Lost in the Design-Execution translation? ?? While talking to a potential client last week, they asked me how to ensure that the designs we deliver weren't going to be simply shelved? Why this Question? They were in a situation in the past where the final designs looked very promising and solved real problems but they had to be shelved because they could not be developed as is. On further probing the Root Cause discovered was: ??Lack of feature parity: The new designs looked sleek but did not cover all the functionalities and use cases. Adding those features either meant significant design rework or compromising the initial elegance. ??Figuring out a phased product rollout was hard: Large products can't be rolled out in one go. So, whose responsibility is it to figure out the incremental piece from end-to-end design solution so it can be pushed to development? These are complex problems but they are more frequent than you might think.?? H o w ? t o ? p r e v e n t? getting into this situation? Proactive Design Strategies ??Design-Dev Alignment: Keep designs within a 2-4 sprint window of development capabilities. If the rollout/implementation discussions aren't happening within that time frame, take a pause and see how to start this conversation instead of continuing to produce more. ??Roadmap Harmony: Regularly sync design efforts with both - the product roadmap, as well as the development roadmap to avoid major deviations. ??Greenfield Expectations: When designing a "greenfield" strategy (entirely new design), set clear expectations that everything might not be implemented as-is or all at once. You might have to come back to design once rollout plans start formalizing. I often connect with various product leaders in the B2B tech space, especially HealthTech (which is our agency's area of expertise), and these challenges often impede good design from reaching the finish line. The MoSCoW prioritization method While improving my UX skills last month, I came across the MoSCoW prioritization method while reading an article. The name "Moscow" is derived from an acronym formed from the first letters of each priority category and is a technique used in project management and software development to prioritize requirements, tasks, or features. From the acronym, 1. M - Must Have: These are critical requirements that are essential for the system to function. Without them, the project would be considered a failure. They are non-negotiable and must be included in the final delivery. More like the core functionality of a product. 2. S - Should Have: These are important requirements that are not critical but add significant value. They are often seen as high-priority and should be included if possible, but the project can still succeed without them. 3. C - Could Have: These are desirable but not necessary requirements. They are often lower priority and are included if time and resources allow. These features enhance the user experience but are not essential to the core functionality. 4. W - Won't Have (this time): These are requirements that have been agreed upon as the least critical, often due to constraints like time, budget, or resources. They are either deferred to a future phase or dropped entirely from the project scope. This method is important because it helps teams and stakeholders focus on delivering the most critical elements of a project first, ensuring that essential functionalities are completed and resources are effectively allocated. It helps in ensuring ??Clarity and Focus: It provides a clear framework for prioritizing tasks, helping teams concentrate on what is most important and avoiding scope creep. ?? You know those notifications we get like: "you're one of the few selected specialists..." and then they throw a challenge at you to write about? Well, I got a little carried away with one of those. The challenge was: "You're facing a client pushing for quick results in UX research. How do you ensure quality isn't compromised?" Since everything I wrote didn’t fit the character count there, I'm leaving it here. ? In my experience, having a transparent backlog tied to an agile methodology can help manage expectations and align priorities with stakeholders. However, when time is tight, the focus needs to shift to how we plan and conduct the research itself. I think time is, and always will be, a challenge when it comes to research, but the integrity of research goes far beyond the timeline you're working with. In fact, a longer timeline doesn't necessarily guarantee reliable research. Reliability, to me, comes from thoughtful planning and smart execution. I believe the first step in maintaining quality under pressure is to clearly define the research OKRs. Since time is a limiting factor, we must be precise about what we need to learn, focusing on the most critical questions that align with business goals and user needs. Prioritization here is essential to ensure the research delivers maximum value. Next, building a solid foundation is key. This means selecting the research method that best fits the OKRs and delivers actionable insights quickly. It’s also important to develop a concise roadmap or script that will guide the research and ensure efficiency, covering essential tasks or user flows while avoiding unnecessary complexities. Finally, I would leverage technology to expedite the process without compromising quality. Automated tools, such as remote usability platforms and A/B testing frameworks, can speed up data collection and analysis. Additionally, AI-driven tools can streamline tasks like survey analysis or even generate report decks, allowing researchers to focus on interpreting findings. Of course, all outputs will be reviewed and validated by the researcher to ensure the integrity and reliability of the results. In summary, I believe that with the right planning, focus on what we want to know, and a touch of technology, we can maintain the integrity of UX research even when time is tight. #UXResearch #UserExperience #ProductDesign #OKRs
