It is only commonsense for President Biden to use executive authority to protect people who have lived in our communities for a long time. He could grant parole-in-place to spouses of U.S. citizens, designate, renew, or redesignate Temporary Protected Status for countries in turmoil, and streamline the application process for “cancellation of removal” for people who are caregivers to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent resident parents, spouses, and children. Take Action NOW to urge the Biden Administration to utilize its legal authority for these essential protections and life-changing opportunities for long-term non-citizen residents of the U.S.: https://lnkd.in/eMDK8ANt

We are resolute in our commitment to fight Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda. We find solace in the millions of voices resisting Trump’s agenda of hate. We remain inspired by the strength in communities across the country uniting for the rights and dignity of immigrants and power in the immigrant people who must unfairly face the immoral and heartless attacks of the Trump regime. As an organization that deeply cares for the dignity, freedom, and safety of all people we are committed to fighting tooth and nail against the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda and the racist ideology at its core. We expect swift and cruel enforcement tactics designed to create a media spectacle that will dehumanize and criminalize our immigrant family members, friends, coworkers, and neighbors while stripping away the already limited protections people have to live and work in the United States without fear of being targeted, detained, and exiled from their loved ones. We are bracing for the suffering ahead while knowing that we still have power. We will not allow the Trump administration or anyone else, including Democratic leaders, to drown out our vision towards more humane and just immigration policy. TAKE ACTION: HIAS invites everyone to call on candidates running in all races from all political parties to stand for welcome, especially with the Democratic National Convention concluding tonight. Standing for welcome means fighting for these commonsense policies: - Investment in an effective asylum system, with increased staffing for immigration court staff, interpreters, immigration judges, and asylum officers. - Fair, effective, and humane border policies that both protect people's right to seek safety and support border security. - Repeal of harmful policies that deny the right to asylum. - Quick access to work permits for people seeking asylum in the U.S. so that they can become economically self-sufficient while they wait for their case to be adjudicated and so they can contribute economically to their communities. - A robust annual target number and arrival of resettled refugees through the United States Refugee Admissions Program. - Annual extension and reauthorization of the Lautenberg Amendment which allows religious minorities from Iran and former Soviet Union countries, including Jews, to come to the U.S. to reunite with their loved ones. - Expanded legal pathways to entry and residency in the U.S. — including increased access to work visas and additional family reunification opportunities. My Petitioner Died. Can I Still Immigrate? If your petitioner dies, the I-130 petition filed on your behalf is automatically revoked, except for widows or widowers of a U.S. citizen. In such cases, the I-130 converts to an I-360 widower) petition. For other applicants, the I-130 is revoked, and immigration under the revoked petition requires a request for and approval of humanitarian reinstatement by USCIS. Yesterday the ACLU published a roadmap on how, if Trump is re-elected, we will fight his threats of mass deportations, ending birthright citizenship and denying kids access to schools. I co-wrote this paper and am excited to share our plans on taking the fight to the state and local level, as well to Congress. https://lnkd.in/gtgSMKhv

Over the past 10 days, riots have broken out across a number of towns and cities in England and in Belfast, Northern Ireland.?While there are underlying grievances around a host of issues affecting much of British society, ranging from increased costs of living to crumbling infrastructure and greatly diminished public services, the immediate trigger for the violence was the tragic murder of three young girls on July 29th in the English town of Southport that within a matter of hours was weaponized by a collision between right-wing extremism and racist and Islamophobic mis/disinformation amplified at scale by social media platforms.?The anger and frustration of right-wing elements was channelled into violence directed at the police, at mosques, at hotels housing asylum seekers and at Muslims on the street, as well as at civil society organizations that support/protect asylum seekers and immigration lawyers.?None of this happens in a vacuum, with years of dehumanizing rhetoric from right-wing politicians, including former government ministers, and the mainstreaming of extremism are at the top of the list of culprits.?Add in the malign efforts of right-wing activists to incite violence and the absence of significant content moderation that enabled mis/disinformation to spread in real time.? ? There are lessons for America to learn from this tragic spasm of violence and, as the 2016 referendum result was a harbinger for what would follow four months later, we dismiss the lessons of the past 10 days at our peril.? ? My analysis of the underlying causes of the violence on the streets of England and Northern Ireland and thoughts on the lessons to learn is available here: https://bit.ly/4fEP5qI ??
