Oglethorpe faculty are at the table for some of the most important conversations about teaching. I appreciate John Nardo representing Oglethorpe University this summer at the International Congress on Mathematical Education in Sydney, Australia. Not only is Dr. Nardo a world-class instructor, he also cares deeply about our students and their academic – and, ultimately, professional – success. #highereducation #studentsuccess #mathematicseducation? https://lnkd.in/eMKiFGn3

Interested in how the 'structure' of your course (e.g., when/how students interact with you and material) affects student learning? Check out this lovely Tea for Teaching with Justin Shaffer!
Multiple studies have found that increasing course structure reduces equity gaps and provides benefits to all students. In this episode, Justin Shaffer joins us to discuss several ways to increase structure in STEM classes. Justin is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and a Teaching Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering and in Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He has taught a variety of both small and large STEM classes in multiple modalities using evidence-based approaches and has won multiple teaching awards as a result of this work. Justin is also an active researcher with 16 peer-reviewed publications and serves as the editor for four STEM education journals. He is the author of a forthcoming book on high-structure course design coming in late 2024 or early 2025 from Macmillan. A transcript of this episode and show notes may be found at https://teaforteaching.com.

The Importance of Recognition in STEM Archer et al. (2012) examined how a good student was defined in the school. They argue that the concept of “ideal learner” is constructed by dominant educational discourses particularly in gendered, racialized, and classed ways that normalize male students who are White and from middle-class families (Archer et al., 2012). For those who do not meet these dominant identities may feel marginalized and consider science foreign even though they are high-ability students (Andersen & Ward, 2013). It is noteworthy that students’ values in science, such as science intrinsic value, science attainment value, and STEM utility value may predict their STEM persistence (Andersen & Ward, 2013). However, recognition is the key to help students develop constructive science identities regardless of their high competence and great performance in science (Carlone & Johnson, 2007; Malone & Barabino, 2008). Because participating in science learning is an emotional choice and process (Kane, 2016) and emotions are inextricably bound with (mis)recognition (Avraamidou, 2019), it is difficult for students with disabilities to develop positive STEM identities if the external does not make them feel a sense of belonging, which may be determined by teacher perception, their access to STEM-related resources, what their family tells them, as well as how the society treats them. Unlocking Equity in Education: Insights from Physics Research The findings from David J. Webb and Cassandra A. Paul, published in 2023, shed light on transformative approaches to address equity gaps in education. Their research challenges traditional perspectives by highlighting the pivotal role of course structure in shaping student outcomes. By making subtle modifications to course design, such as altering the sequencing of content or adjusting testing methods, educators can effectively narrow achievement disparities without compromising academic standards. These innovative strategies offer a promising path forward for fostering inclusivity and diversity in STEM fields. What do you think? According to the National Science Foundation, the average mathematics test scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress?declined in 2022 compared to previous years. Improving math competency and fostering interest in STEM must start early in a child’s education and must reach across all communities. Doing so will help broaden and diversify the talent pipeline into industries of strategic and economic importance, ensuring U.S. competitiveness for years to come. https://lnkd.in/dGCA4Jqn
