Luxury or Exploitation? A Five-Star Reality Check I’ve been fortunate to stay in premium hotels, dine at world-class restaurants, and explore countless cities. But lately, I’ve been asking myself: When did “luxury” become an excuse for exploitation? Here are just a few baffling examples I’ve experienced at so-called five-star establishments: 1. 2.5 KD valet fee at a top-tier hotel—after spending 80 KD on a dinner for four in Kuwait. 2. 80€ sunbed fee at a Cannes hotel’s pool—even for paying guests. 3. $40/night parking in Beverly Hills—when your steep room rate should surely cover more than just the mattress. 4. Two-hour dining limit at a fine-dining spot in Mayfair—so much for lingering over dessert and espresso. At first glance, these might seem like small grievances, but together they paint a picture of businesses pushing the boundaries of what they can charge, at the expense of true hospitality. What happened to the idea that luxury should make you feel special? ? It’s not just about the brand name. Real luxury is measured by how it feels to stay, dine, or do business with you. ? Excessive fees undermine trust. Every surprise charge chips away at the sense of genuine care and comfort guests expect. ? We need to speak up. If you’ve had a similar experience, make your voice heard—feedback is the only way for these establishments to realize they’ve gone too far.
