According to the National Science Foundation, the average mathematics test scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress?declined in 2022 compared to previous years. Improving math competency and fostering interest in STEM must start early in a child’s education and must reach across all communities. Doing so will help broaden and diversify the talent pipeline into industries of strategic and economic importance, ensuring U.S. competitiveness for years to come. https://lnkd.in/dGCA4Jqn

#STEM #K12 #WorkforceDevelopment "Key to developing the domestic STEM workforce is improving K-12 science education, explained McNutt. Currently, more than 35% of U.S. eighth graders are not proficient in math according to U.S. standards. By international standards, the U.S. ranks middle-of-the-pack in science and below the middle in math." https://lnkd.in/eFujCmXE

Oglethorpe faculty are at the table for some of the most important conversations about teaching. I appreciate John Nardo representing Oglethorpe University this summer at the International Congress on Mathematical Education in Sydney, Australia. Not only is Dr. Nardo a world-class instructor, he also cares deeply about our students and their academic – and, ultimately, professional – success. #highereducation #studentsuccess #mathematicseducation? https://lnkd.in/eMKiFGn3

In an era where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education is often hailed as the pinnacle of academic and professional preparation, it's essential to remember the critical role of virtue cultivation in shaping not only well-rounded individuals but also ethical and visionary STEM leaders. At Westside Christian Academy, we champion an integrated approach to education to cultivate affections for all that is good, true, and beautiful. Here's how we apply our understanding of virtue to the STEM careers: 1?? Math is not just about numbers; it's a language that demonstrates the order and truth inherent in our universe. It teaches us that behind every complex problem lies an elegant solution waiting to be discovered. 2?? Science allows us to peer into the vastness of God's creation, from the smallest atom to the expansive universe. It reveals the wonders that beckon us to explore, understand, and stand in awe. 3?? In engineering, we mimic our Creator's ingenuity, designing solutions and innovations that reflect the complexity and beauty of the world around us. 4?? The Humanities: The Moral Compass - While STEM disciplines teach us how to achieve what's possible, the humanities teach us to discern what's preferable. They provide the lens to view our scientific and mathematical pursuits, ensuring that our advancements honor ethical standards and contribute positively to humanity. ???? By integrating STEM with the classical emphasis on virtue cultivation, we educate students not just to be proficient in their fields but also to set their affections on endeavors on the good, true, and beautiful. This approach ensures that our graduates are not only skilled professionals but also compassionate and wise stewards of their talents and the world around them. #WestsideChristianAcademy #STEM #Humanities #EthicalLeadership #TrueBeautyGoodness #IntegratedEducation #FaithAndLearning

As the academic year begins in September, we are reminded once again that education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. It's about acquiring facts and igniting a lifelong passion for learning, growth, and self-discovery. True education inspires and empowers us to explore the potential and understand the world deeply. When we're educated, we're empowered. We can challenge the status quo, inspire change, and overcome obstacles. Marie Curie, a trailblazing scientist who won Nobel Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry, exemplifies how education and perseverance can overcome immense challenges and achieve greatness. Access to education continues to be a challenge in regions facing poverty, conflict, or cultural barriers, limiting the potential of generations. However, even in a world with high literacy rates, there remains a significant gap in the quality of education. In today’s competitive world, it is not only about being literate but about being highly educated. Quality education is the missing link that determines whether we can truly thrive and contribute meaningfully to society. September is a time to celebrate education, honor inspiring teachers, and just another month reminding us to renew our commitment to learning.

"Students who believe that they have the skills and abilities to succeed at academic tasks perform better than those with lower efficacy expectancies " The role of self-efficacy in education is often overlooked. When students believe they have what it takes to succeed, they are more likely to do so. Something to ponder over the summer as we make plans for 2024/25. How can we build our students up to believe in themselves? https://lnkd.in/epmCfKgq
