https://lnkd.in/gSjMEz3b Disturbing but insightful read on the prevalent mental health crisis among our youth. This article sheds light on a pressing issue that demands urgent attention. Professor Hiscock's emphasis on understanding the developmental stages of teenagers resonates deeply. It's alarming to note the disproportionate representation of girls, Indigenous, and gender-diverse children in these statistics. This highlights the importance of intersectional approaches in addressing mental health challenges. Surely creating healthy rites of passage and a sense of belonging are major factors that can support during these critical times. #MentalHealthAwareness #YouthWellbeing Hunter Johnson Paula Conroy Louka Parry Dr Catriona Wallace

Bridging the Gap in Teen Mental Health Support A recent CDC study reveals a significant disconnect between teens and parents regarding mental health support. While 76.9% of parents believe they are providing adequate support, only 27.5% of teens feel the same. This gap highlights the need for better communication and understanding between parents and their children. Experts suggest listening without judgment, building trust, and offering unconditional support to help bridge this gap. #teenmentalhealth #anxiety #OCD #parentingtips #teenparents #mentalhealth #anxiety #OCD

Words matter. But we need even more science to bridge the gap between evidence and policy. Too many lives are being destroyed or lost all together. Psychologist, Lisa Damour, emphasizes the challenges parents face in initiating conversations about crucial issues such as mental health, social media, and physical safety with their teens. A recent Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey reveals that while parents express worries about their child's future and experiences, they often struggle to engage in meaningful discussions with them. Damour offers several strategies to facilitate these conversations: allow the child to lead, avoid sudden "sneak attack" discussions, remain unfazed by typical teenage eye-rolling, and keep talks concise, understanding that these discussions should be ongoing rather than one-time events. Interestingly, the survey indicates that many teens are eager to discuss mental health and social media but tend to disengage if they feel adults lack understanding. To foster connection, Damour advises approaching such topics with curiosity and a willingness to listen, as teens value being heard over receiving advice.
