U18 Marc Walker The intense focus and unwavering determination on the field by Zoe and her team mirror the approach to life's challenges, whether on the pitch or scaling mountains. Rugby teaches us powerful lessons about neurodiversity: 1. Intense Focus: The ability to zero in on a goal, whether it's the try line or a mountain summit 2. Adaptability: Quickly shifting strategies in response to the ever-changing game or terrain 3. Team Synergy: Leveraging diverse strengths to achieve collective success These traits, honed on the rugby pitch and mountain trails, are reshaping how we view neurodiversity in education and the workplace. Young adults/youth like Zoe are proving that non-conventional approaches can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Mountain + Mind + Movements: Zoe joined ATC NATION PTE LTD for these trips : - hills training in Singapore, Mountains in Malaysia and Indonesia : from 4 years old - Mt. Fuji at 8 years old - Mt. Kinabalu at 9 - Mt. Kilimanjaro at 10 These early triumphs weren't just physical feats; they were crucibles forging a resilient, innovative spirit that now fuels her passion for rugby and beyond. My Take on What Makes Some Events Stand Out As a Chief Organizer of TEDxUWCSEAEast and multiple other events in #Singapore, #AbuDhabi, #Shanghai, and #NYC, I believe what makes events impactful are: 1. The Organizer’s "Why?" ?? The purpose behind an event shapes everything—its vibe, experience, goals, and agenda. When Moana Gregori and I organized TEDx in Singapore, our why was: to introduce the UWC South East Asia community to diverse stories and show what’s possible. Without a clear purpose, an event can lose its soul. 2. Diversity of Speakers ?? Bringing together different perspectives challenges attendees to see the world in new ways. Ilias Anwar is creating a space by blending different communities, inviting voices from various backgrounds to inspire and provoke thought in his audience. 3. Curated Invitations and Guests ?? Tailoring the guest list makes an event feel personal, almost as if it was designed for each attendee. It’s always better to plan with a specific persona in mind rather than casting too wide a net. Natalie Neptune and I are organizing GenZ mixers specifically for high school students, undergrads, dropouts, and recent alumni. This focus ensures every aspect of the event resonates with our audience. A few weeks ago, at one of Phil Castro’s Kamp events, I was reminded once again how essential curation is. Our hearts are flying: from Arlesheim to New Zealand.??? ? How do you reach thousands of employees worldwide – from the headquarters to our medicinal herb garden in New Zealand? ? We at Weleda AG make sure everyone is heard, involved, informed, and inspired. Because good communication and innovation start from within - we meet 4 times a year for the Global Town Hall (a digital, English-language event for all 2300 Weleda employees worldwide). ? By now, the Global Town Hall is definitely one of my favorite internal communication formats. Every time, I leave this meeting with new motivation and lots of Weleda spirit that makes our company so special.??? ? It goes beyond simply sharing updates. It’s a space to celebrate success stories, showcase outstanding projects, and get to know different locations better. Each Weleda location can actively contribute to the Global Town Hall, allowing the entire company to share in what’s happening there. The feedback from the workforce is overwhelmingly positive. How do we build truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive events? SAACI Vice Chairperson Gheeta Payle and CEO Glenton De Kock attended the 2024 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS AND CONVENTION ASSOCIATION (ICCA) Congress in Abu Dhabi from 20 to 23 October, where the importance of bringing young talent into the fold was at the fore. “Hosting large global events is only half the battle – the other half is ensuring we’re developing future African event planners, tourism professionals, and event consultants who can stand confidently on the global stage, making their mark internationally while understanding local dynamics,” says Payle. Not only were students allowed to attend for free, but they also received access to vital industry resources and connections that would set them up for future success. During the congress, Payle served as a mentor in the BE Ambassadors Programme, guiding six students who joined a cohort of 60 young professionals gaining hands-on experience at the Congress. The event also featured the launch of a whitepaper crafted by the ICCA Future Leaders Council. Soon to be available internationally, this “toolkit” provides actionable steps to advance diversity and inclusion at every stage of event planning. SAACI’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond ICCA, and we’re proud to collaborate locally with universities like CPUT, NMU and UCT to develop young MICE industry professionals.
