Excellent work Madeline Rihner and Jacob Whittle!! A very nice contribution to the conference exploring the effect of allocation of by-products via a multi-sector LCA of low carbon steel and cement production on the UK. TL;DR - shifts towards more sustainable practices (lower carbon emissions) in one sector (i.e. steel) can have a serious (and sometimes negative) knock-on environmental and economic effects in another sector (i.e. cement)
SMASH PhD student, Madeline Rihner, is currently attending the 34th Annual Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe annual meeting! One of SETAC’s main focuses is on life cycle assessment methodology which Madeline is currently using to assess different low carbon cement solutions in the UK. Madeline will be presenting a poster alongside Jacob Whittle on Thursday titled “Allocation of by-products: a multi-sector LCA of low carbon steel and cement production on the UK.” Nice work Madeline! #LCA #lifecycleassessment #phd #research #cement #researchanddevelopment #netzero #sustainability #conference #outreach

? I am happy to share that the second paper from my PhD (co-authored with Kathryn Arnold and Oliver Allchin) has recently been published in the open-access, open-science journal Evidence-Based Toxicology ? The paper describes an a priori protocol (developed with an array of technical experts from across the globe) which serves to map existing #evidence on the effects ? of flame retardant ?? substances across ecologically relevant endpoints ?? ?? ?? ?? Over the course of the next year I will 1?? use the protocol to identify, organise and synthesise existing empirical evidence on the toxicity of flame retardant substances, from both novel and traditional endpoints, and 2?? map the evidence in a user friendly, interrogable and interactive database to provide accessible reproducible, transparent (and ecologically relevant data) to aid regulatory decision making. The data could be used to inform future research (i.e., hazard assessment ?), or synthesis (i.e., meta-analysis ??), inform regulatory action (i.e., restriction ??) or aid the development of evidence based methods in chemical risk assessment. As an early career researcher, the process of submitting, revising, (and consequently) publishing through the use of Evidence Based Toxicology’s open and transparent practices has been overwhelmingly positive, and I thank both Paul Whaley (Handling Editor) and Katherine Pelch for their kind, supportive and constructive comments. All of which, we believe, have fundamentally improved the protocol. You can read the #OpenAccess protocol ?? https://lnkd.in/evSFgAS9

?? Did you know that the bioconcentration factor can be a key factor for aquatic toxicity analysis? ?? A new publication of QSAR Lab Team is already waiting for you! Researchers from the QSAR Lab: Dominika Kowalska, Anita Sosnowska PhD Eng., Szymon Zdybel, Maciej St?pnik MD, PhD, DSc, and Prof. Tomasz Puzyn (CEO), conducted an in silico study to determine the relationship between structure properties of PFAS and their bioconcentration factors (BCFs). ?? The publication describes a regression model predicting the BCF of PFAS compounds against the taxonomic group Teleostei. The model has excellent predictive abilities and can be used to screen against a large group of compounds such as PFAS. By using in silico modelling methods for rapid pre-screening, it has been able to predict BCFs for more than 2200 Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances that have not been experimentally screened for this. Based on Annex XIII of the REACH Regulation, each of those analyzed PFAS was classified as non-bioaccumulative, bioaccumulative or very bioaccumulative. The results described can be a useful tool to fulfill data gaps and support the search for the best alternatives for environmentally hazardous PFAS. ? We warmly invite you to read this work!?? The paper is available under the link: https://lnkd.in/d-EkDGAz The presented work is a part of the PROMISCES (101036449) project. #PFAS #BCF #bioconcentration #aquatic #toxicity #analysis #REACH #project #research #insilico #model

LCA is not mandatory but what if this tool would be integrated into country policies? It would push sustainability culture towards a fast transformation, a life cycle thinking approach is urgent for all Industry if we want to salve the planet, we don't a lot of time anymore. What excite me more about LCA technology is the flexibility, you have a model for you product and you can simulate every kind of situation, in real time you an output and you can scientifically measure the impact of your change and you can test if your strategy brings you toward positive improvement.. What if I change this raw material? What If I change supplier with a mix Energy 100% renewable? What If I look for a chemical process with a lower power Energy Consumption? What I really don't understand is why this technology is mainly managed by consultant, only people who work in the organization can value this technology and bring improvements, industry need to understand that a life cycle thinking wins when this life thinking approach is set into the Company processess. This is why I'm fully engaged with the scheme EPD process, because this is the best way for an Organization to be the owner of the product Life Cycle and to be fully aware about the key drivers of improvements. It requires a lot of effort but the value is "measurable".
SETAC EUROPE 26TH LCA SYMPOSIUM | We’re excited to announce Bj?rn Spak, advisor at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, as one of our Keynote Speakers at the symposium! ?? Talk title: Policy-driven LCA in the Age of the Triple Planetary Crisis The extensive efforts made by academia and industry to develop, refine and standardise LCA methods have largely focused on voluntary implementation, while the integration of LCA in mandatory policy has only recently experienced a boom. As LCA is integrated into Swedish national and European legislation there is a new sense of urgency and a need to shift focus in method development. The scientific community needs to reassess how to best come to terms with different methodological perspectives to be able to influence policy under development while decision makers need to reassess how to best support and utilize the scientific community. Learn more about the Keynote Speakers and the full programme at the symposium's platform:?https://lnkd.in/dcUtKtMY ? The conference takes place on 21–23 October 2024, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Today, CWN hosted a forum at the International Water Association’s World Water Congress and Exhibition. The discussion focused on technological advances in our ability to assess chemicals in water and measure human exposure. New assessment methods can change how chemicals are regulated and products are designed. Until recently, regulatory frameworks have not kept pace with scientific advances, focusing instead on lengthy and costly chemical-by-chemical assessments using animal testing. Recent changes to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (Bill S-5) and EU legislation open the way for regulating chemicals based on real-life exposure to the mix of contaminants in water. Scientific thought leaders Dr. Milou Dingemans of KWR Water Research Institute in the Netherlands and Dr. Niladri Basu of McGill University explained developments in the field of toxicology, including new approach methods (NAMs) that use digital models, molecular techniques and cell systems. They also described advances in assessing risks to human health that account for exposure to toxic chemical mixtures and cumulative impacts over time. After years of discussion about cumulative impacts, Dr. Dingemans and Dr. Basu stressed that this is a pivotal moment in the evolution of toxicological assessment of chemicals in our water, and underscored the importance of working closely with government regulators and private companies to ensure scientific advances are fully integrated into public policy and product design.
