8 years ago this month I entered this industry. Reflecting back on so many projects, so many clients, so many bids… I never stop learning and there’s always a new standard, a new client preference, a new approach to design- it can feel like a technical grind. But I’ve found that growing my knowledge of how to lead people and how to improve processes will always leave a larger impact than improving my technical expertise. Remember to leave room for personal conversations. Ask your people doing the work what needs to go smoother on a project and try it out even if you think your idea is better. Invest in your people first and you’ll be surprised how much the work quality benefits. There’s always going to be another deadline and a work order to improve but you will lose your people if you make your product more important than your team. #teamwork #career #design #utility #electrical #engineeringanddesign #distribution #leadership

There is a lot of discussion of the need for ensuring competency in fire engineering but what is discussed less is that of character. As highlighted in this Harvard Business Review article, it’s a combination of competency and character that others derive trust in a persons ability and motivation to do a given task. Assessing competency determines if a person is likely able to perform a given task in the future at a sufficient level based on past qualifications and/or experience. This is very much an assessment of “capability” but does not consider the “motivations” or “values” (informed through character) to use such skills/experience appropriately. Indeed it may be possible the same skills of competency to do the “right thing” could be utilised through adverse motivated reasoning to justify something else. Maybe we need to be including discussions about “character” when we talk about “competency” in fire engineering if we are going to achieve trust in the industry. https://lnkd.in/euKapdRW

Effective Communication Effective communication is the backbone of any successful operation, especially in the oil and gas industry where safety, efficiency, and collaboration are paramount. Whether it's between field teams, engineers, or management, clear communication ensures that everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals. Here are some key principles I’ve found essential: 1- Clarity and precision: Avoid assumptions and make sure instructions are unambiguous. In our industry, misunderstandings can lead to costly delays or safety risks. 2- Active listening: Great communication isn't just about talking—it's about listening to understand, not just to respond. This fosters trust and teamwork. 3- Consistent updates: Especially in dynamic environments like ours, regular updates ensure that everyone stays informed and ready to adapt to changes. 4- Cultural awareness: With teams spread globally, being mindful of cultural differences in communication styles helps to build stronger international teams. Strong communication leads to safer, more efficient operations and better overall outcomes. Let’s continue refining this skill to drive success in all our projects. #Leadership #Communication #OilAndGas #Teamwork #Safety #welltest #Well_Test

We DO NOT give feedback, we are not friends, this is business” ? This is the response I received from a senior Director of one of the largest EPCM’s. He further went onto have a shouting match with me and said “I’m on €300 per hour, I do not discuss information about recruitment.” Bearing in mind that this guy called us directly in the first place. At konstrukt, we never put clients on a pedestal. We do not care who you are, unless you show respect and integrity, we do not work with you. The director was not happy with my response and seemed shocked I had matched him with my tone of voice. I repeated, “we need feedback, we cannot go back to these candidates with nothing it’s not right and unprofessional” Director: “Again, we never give feedback. This sort of behaviour will get you blacklisted” So I’m not sticking up for agencies here when I say this because I speak for konstrukt and the candidates we represent but this is a massive problem from the top down. If one of europes largest EPCM’s Directors can respond like this also their purchasing team may I add, what hope does this give the industry or the people below them in that chain. Treat everyone with respect. If you interview somebody, give them feedback. It’s not F*cking rocket science. #construction #europe

*Corporate Joke* ?????????? A woman was in hot air balloon when she realized that she is lost. She reduced her altitude and she shouted to a man below, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend to meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." Man below replied, "You are in hot air balloon 30 feet above the ground. You are at 41° North latitude and 59° West longitude." The lady remarked, "You must be an engineer!" The man asked, "How do you know ?" The lady replied, "Everything you told me is technically correct but useless, and the fact is that I'm still lost." The engineer said, "You must be in Top Management." This time it was the lady who asked, "How do you know?" Engineer :- "You don't know where you are or where you're going, and you have no technical knowledge. You made a promise which you've no idea how to keep and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems!" ?????????????? #management

Quote of the Day “He worked really hard, Grandma” “So do washing machines” - Grandpa, Christmas Vacation (1989) Systems Engineering requires more than hard work. Clark’s problem was that he was stuck in his first feedback loop.?If he had prepared himself and everyone around him for the certain failure that occurs on the first attempt, this seen would not have been funny at all. It would have been mundane and we would never have scene it. A proper feedback loop includes both design and assessment phases. A proper effort into systems engineering requires many feedback loops. Many feedback loops requires broad notification and constant communication with the leadership team working with you.

On my first day as a CEO, I thought my background in electrical engineering would perfectly prepare me to tackle the challenges ahead. After all, engineering taught me to solve problems systematically and optimize systems for efficiency. But I quickly realized that leading a company isn’t just about solving technical challenges—it’s about leading people and making decisions that shape a vision. Here are three lessons I learned along the way that I wish I’d known from Day 1: It’s all about the connections—and not just the circuits. As an engineer, I was used to perfecting systems, but leading a team requires building human connections. Success comes from aligning people around a common vision and creating an environment where they can collaborate, innovate, and thrive. Helping individuals feel valued and motivated is just as critical as solving any technical challenge. Let go of control to gain more control. In the early days, I felt the need to personally oversee everything, much like fine-tuning an electrical system. But as the company grew, I learned that delegation is a superpower. By trusting others to take ownership, you create room to focus on strategy and vision, which is where a CEO's energy truly belongs. The right team is your greatest power supply. In engineering, the quality of a component impacts the entire system. The same principle applies to your team. Surrounding yourself with smart, capable, and passionate individuals is non-negotiable. But it doesn’t stop there—you also need to invest in their growth and create a culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute. Leadership is a lot less like managing systems and a lot more like managing energy—your own and that of your team. What’s something you’ve learned on your leadership journey that surprised you?
